Im new to this list and although Im not a flautist, I have just finished writing and recording a Flute & Clarinet Minuet with the eminent Paul Dunkel, principal Flautist of the New York City Ballet.
I thought it would be kind of cool to make all the parts, scores and MP3s available to anyone who might want to take a look and listen. I have also created a “music-minus-one” version, with the solo flute part left out so if you want, you can download the flute part and the “music minus flute” mp3 and play along.
I am offering these files for free because I thought it might be a nice gesture for those who like to experience new music. I read the commerical posting rule and I think Im OK with this but if the mods see a conflict, I understand and apologize in advance.
On a side note: We’re mostly “fluters” not “flautists”.
This forum is centered around traditional music, not so much classical.
But there are those among us that do that as well.
I have to disagree with the term “fluters”, which I don’t think is even a word (at least it’s not in my Oxford dictionary), though if enough people start using it, then it may well make it into the dictionary!
I think that the term “flautist” is fine, and can be used interchangeably with “flutist”, the latter term seemingly preferred by American’s and traditional musicians. The term “flautist” does not mean a classical flute player, it simply means someone who plays the flute. Try googling “jazz flautist”, “blues flautist”, “traditional flautist”, even “classical flautist” and you’ll see that “flautist” does not encompass just classical flute playing. There are a similar number of pages found if you replace “flautist” with “flutist”, with the exception of “traditional flutist”, which has more hits. There are very few hits if you replace “flautist” with “fluter”.
That googlefight page is interesting, but not too useful since it doesn’t look at the context of the word. I looked at the pages found in google for “fluter”, and most had very little to do with the musical instrument called the flute. www.fluter.de looked like some news site (with a story about a man who sucks his thumb!); www.patented-antiques.com listed some fluting devices; icecreammam.imeem.com had a “Scooter Flute Ice Cream Truck Video” (which I didn’t watch!). However, there were links that were about the flute we know of, probably about a quarter to a third of the total at a guess.
I don’t really mind what people call themselves when they play the flute, but I for one don’t feel like I undergo any transmogrification when I skip from playing classical to traditional and visa-versa.
Yes, there is a german word “Fluter”, meaning “floodlight”, and that’s also where the name of that online magazin comes from. “fluten” is “to flood”, “die Flut” is “the flood” etc.
Now what have flutes to do with water? Or light, for that matter?
Well aside from the very interesting debate about the terms Fluter, Flautist etc…Thanks to those of you who made the nice comments about the minuet. I hope you can enjoy it for a long time to come.
The bump was me. . This was an older post and I thought some others might want to check out the music so instead of writing a new post, I “bumped” this one up
anyone else out there who would have or does play clarinet ?
i did , many moons ago , and while i still get the a creepy chill down my spine , when i think of Herr Weber’s concerto , i do credit my lung power ,such as it is like , having the ability to play longer on one breath ,on the flute , to having played the clarinet.
