I’d like to have something better than my old dictaphone for easy recording, and now seems like a good time, since I’ll be going to a workshop I’ll want to record soon. I’ve read through the archives and see that that Sonys are winners, but they’re not in my current price range.
Does anyone have the entry-level Sharps – MD-MT15 or 20? Any good?

Hi Tery,
If you want to record sessions/workshops etc what you want to look for is a minidisk unit with a mic/line in option (plug-in-power).
Some models do not have this option.
The quality of the recording will be very much determined by the microphone you use.
I use a Sharp Md-MT80, which I am very satisfied with. At the time I thought to save money for the stero-mic by choosing the player without LP function. I now wich i had put down the extra cash for that.
I don’t think sharp or Sony make any inferior products - it’s just a matter of: will it fit your need.

If you are going to be recording with a mike you are better off with a Sharp minidisc unit, not a Sony. The Sony’s are unable to adjust the recording level on the fly (while recording.) It doesn’t sound like a big deal but it really is. One of the sony models will do it but it is around $300 USD. I have a Sharp md-sr60 and enjoy it but also wish I had spent the extra bucks for a MDLP unit.

My sony medium grade MDR (not bargain, not top of the line) does this just fine. I can hear where I did change volume on some of my recordings. I got it about 3 years ago. I haven’t had reason to pay attention to recent developments since it works so well.

Mine cost about $170 through CircuitCity.com and came with a USB adaptor for downloads from your computer to the MDR (not visa versa, thanks alot paranoid recording industry!). I spent $99 on a sony mic through Outpost.com. The sound is great.
If you search the old archives, I probably had my model numbers in there for reference.
Get a good mike too! The difference between my old cheap mike and a better one is immense.
