Well, it’s not USB, but I use a Labtech verse 504 plugged into to mic jack, and I have been very happy with the ‘quietness’ of it. I don’t have to do ANY noise filtering of any kind.
Don’t get me wrong, there is of course a wee bit of ‘hiss’ in the background, but you would have to strain to hear it at all.
Hope you can find a decent USB if that’s a must have for ya.
Take care,
John
EDIT: Oh yeah, it’s under $20.00 USD

Hi John,
I would like to use a USB port because I can’t find the mic jack. I found the earphone jack…and other strange jacks with odd symobls over them but none realy look like a mic. SIGH Thanks for the info through, if I ever find the mic jack I’ll look into the 504…by the way what do you use to clean up the background noise?

This adapter is great because it also serves as a little preamp for your mic.

I use this with my Audio Technica AT822
http://www.audio-technica.com/prodpro/profiles/AT822.html
It’s a pro - stereo condensor mic.
Sounds like you don’t have a mic input jack. If you had it, it would look just like your sound output (headphone) jack… Do you have an ibook?
I just got a powerbook g4 and it has a minijack input… I still use the USB adapter though because I get a better recording level due to the extra boost from the USB port.

My lap top is a Dell pen 3…one would think it would have a mic jack but I can’t find one. It has a jack for everything else that I don’t use though. :-<
Thanks for the info!

Yeah, that is kinda weird theres no mic jack, but the USB adapter sounds cool. When I was still using Windoze I used A combo of Goldwave and Sound Forge. Sound Forge has a most excellent noise reduction plug-in already built in, although it is rather pricy.
I use Linux now, and use a program calleed APC studio. Wow, is all I have to say. Vedy Vedy naaaice.
Not to mention, like most software for Linux… it’s free!
Anyway, I believe you are using Windows correct? and if so, Gold Wave is a good, cheap (free to try) program, and if you mess with the noise-reduction waveform, you can get quite the impressive results from it as well.
Be sure the room is quiet, and that you record at a medium level. This lowers the inherent ‘hiss’ when recording, and that way you can increase the volume within Gold Wave and it’s easier to filter if it’s already mostly quiet anyway.
Hope that was somewhat helpful…
Take care,
John
Goldwave sounds like a great idea…I do use Windows XP…and there is a small program that records but to get good sound the record level is up there. Also, the lil program does not do anything for noise reduction.
Thank you for all the infomation…hopefuly I will be able to post some songs on C&F that people can hear the whistle instead of just “sssffffffffsssffff”.

i think on dell’s it’s the yellow minijack that’s line in. the green is headphone/line out right? anyways, i haven’t tried recording anything on my powerbook g4 yet. i wonder how good the built in mic is, hehe.
i should probably buy a good condenser mic for my laptop and my minidisc recorder though. that would be ideal.
psh or maybe if i ever find a few thousand dollars lying around
, a nice studio mic and an usb audio interface with xlr’s hehe.
The USB adapter looks OK but I’d still like to find a mike with a direct USB hookup if such exists. My reasons are twofold: My desktop PC has two front-mounted USB ports, while the audio line in is as near inaccessible as makes no matter. Also, I’ve already got way more wires and other stuff lying about and I’d like to keep it as simple as possible.
Chuck, this is only one of I’m sure, many different models available…
It looks like a possibility?
Take care,
John
And if I could spell, I could stop editing al lmy posts!!
