MISTER TANSY !!! Long time… No talk !
How’s your Cane Fields of Plenty?
Have I got a reference for you:
MAKING AND PLAYING MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
by Jack Botermans, Herman DeWitt, & Hans Goddefroy
translated from the Flemish language, into English by the
University of Washington Press, March 1990. (Out of Print)
There are 15 USED copies priced “from” $11 USD on Amazon at the
moment…I know this for a fact, as I just looked it up, just now,
on Monday March 23rd, 2009.
There’s a pattern in this Book for a Bagpipe made from Elder
(the wood with the soft spongy pith down the middle).
The Plans show a Single Reeded Chanter, and One Single Reed Drone.
I think Herman DeWitt, the famous Flemish Piper, is the author of this section
of the Book, as he knows that Elder was THE basic construction material for
many of the “Germanic” Pipes. The Elder wood in Europe is hard enough to turn
in a lathe, and chair & table legs were made from it…but never any part of a
Child’s Cradle, because “The Elder Mother” would then come and steal the Baby.
But this is a Dudelsack we’re talking about, so in this case, the resident Fairies put the Music
into the Wood of the Pipes…AND you’re supposed to ask permission from the
“Good-Folk” before you cut the Elder…this is part of the ELDER Folklore
(I don’t really believe this stuff, but it couldn’t hurt anything… to do it).
So get the Book and Start Knocking the Pith Out of the Elder Pipes.
Good Luck and All That,
Sean Folsom
