My Copley got here today…

Pat

Pat, is that the “original” M&E design or the more recent R&R design? I can’t tell from the photos (everything’s black) or from the description. Thanks.

Feadoggie:

I’m not sure - I assume it’s the original design. Did you look at all the pictures? I just checked again and they look fine on my computer…

Pat

I think what Feadoggie meant was that with the flute being all black it’s hard to make out any detail. The pictures themselves are coming across OK. Judging by the spacing of the extra holes on the foot joint, I would venture that this is one of the original design M&E flutes (I have a 5-key from that generation).

Yes, that was what I was trying to say. Thanks, mkchen. The pictures are fine, Pat. I assumed it was the older design too and thought it might be nice to point that out. I have two of the “originals”, one keyless and one 5 key, probably just like mkchen’s. They are both good flutes. The keyless has been my travel flute for years. I also have an M&E R&R model. It’s quite a different beast from the “original” model. Buyers may not already have one of each at hand to make a comparison to the pictures. I thought it might be a useful point of information for potential buyers to know which design you have available. Good luck with the auction.

By the way, I too am saving my pennies to replace the M&E keyless “original” with one of Dave’s delrin flutes. I have a blackwood Copley and like it. I’ve enjoyed the delrin versions I have tried quite a lot. Let us know how you get on with yours.

Playing-wise, what is the difference between the old and new? I’m not familiar with his flutes.

I think it’s best to just say they are two different flutes. Individuals may find one or the other more to their preference. The hole layout on the original may be easier for some to cover. I find it easier to get a reedy tone on the R&R. Both are very playable and durable flutes. I’m just one pair of hands and lips. Others will have different hands, lips and personal observations.
