Hi all,
Been playing a low d for a few months. Grip and span no bother, as I was once a player of uilleann pipes. Love the voice of the low f whistle and am wondering how the finger span/grip compares.
Thanks,
J

It is easier, I doubt you will have a problem. Low F is Higher than Low D. The spacing is actually pretty similar to what you would experience on Pipes or Flute.
Yup, I realize the pitch is higher and therefore the scale is shorter. I think what I was after (and I should have just come out with it) is: Do you use piper’s grip on a low f or a fingertip grip?
I don’t use the piper’s grip on the three top holes my low F, which happens to be an Alba. It’s easier to use the fingertip pads. I have to use the piper’s grip on the right hand, though.
Cillian Vallely does.
I use piper’s grip on the F.
Low G and above, I can use the first pad of the fingers.
I’m getting a alto F very soon so I too am interested in what everyone thinks. I am a x-large person so my fingering on the Chiefy low D is all finger tips and my only dif is I use my pinky for the bottom hand instead of me third… I play pipes instead of a flute and my council was to do what feels good, dodgie advice under normal circumstances but in this its worked out spot on fer me…
