Any CDs anyone can recommend that feature the low whistle (and of course great tunes).
Thanks, Doug
Mike McGoldrick’s ‘Morning Rory’ & ‘Fused’ are my favourites!

Barry
Would be hard to miss Joe McKenna’s Low Whistle CD… which has some awesome tunes.
Phil Hardy has a couple of CDs with all sorts of whistles (naturally!). A lot of the music is not trad, but it’s interesting stuff very well played.
Last time I saw Solas, Seamus Egan played only low whistle, so I’d imagine their recordings have a lot of low D.
In addition to those mentioned (and I can’t possibly recommend McGoldrick’s stuff highly enough) , Eamonn Dillon’s “Storm The Kettle”, Eoin Duignan’s “Coumineol” and “Ancient Rite”, as well Hevia’s 2 CD’s which I can’t remember the names of at the moment, all have lot’s of good Low whistle on them.
Anything with Rory Campbell playing - Like Old Blind Dogs band stuff from recent years, and Rory’s collaborations with Malcolm Stitt. Rory’s got a somewhat unique and wonderful style, lots of influence from his piping, aside from McGoldrick, Rory Campbell is one of my favorite Low Whistle players to listen to. I just wish I could figure out all those wacked piping ornaments he’s got going on ![]()
James McNally plays some wonderful stuff on Low whistle, both solo and with Afro Celts, but it’s not for everyone. Good player though, and again, with a different style. If you ever get the chance to see Afro Celts live, don’t miss it, they are one of the best shows I’ve seen.
Cormac Breatnach is another fine player, but I don’t think he plays a lot of low D, on his CD’s.
Seamus Egan, on the first couple of Solas CD’s
Finally, if you want to be totally demoralized to the point of chucking your Low D in the trash bin, buy a copy of Brendan Ring’s “Troublesome Things”, but don’t say I didn’t warn ya!
(And feel free to send your Low D’s to me, instead of pitching them folks.)

P.S. Warning: If you’re looking for pure drop ITM, none of the above qualify, most of it is not even close, but then, rarely do pure drop players choose Low whistles over the flute, hence the lack of really trad Low whistle recordings.
Thanks for the info. A lot of this I din’t know about. Like the old Blind Old Dogs, but didn’t know about Rory Campbell. Anyone hear of Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh? She plays low whistle on “Inis Oirr” on a Barry Phillips CD. It was my “what is that instrument ? . . . I need to play” it moment.
Doug
I second Rory Campbell… saw him live a couple of times with Deaf Shepherd!
John McCusker also plays a bit of nice low whistle on his albums. There’s some great double whistle action on the Kate Rusby DVD when both he and Mike McGoldrick (plus rest of band - double bass, guitar, melodeon, vocals) duet!
