loudest whistle

I was playing my Mellow Dog (tweaked) with a group today and the poor thing just got swollowed up and lost inside the mess.
What whistles are loud enough to overcome these jams - but don’t sound so sharp and harsh?

Next time I getting out my thin weasel.

Harumph.

Suggestions? My alba is also quiet - - - as is the O’brien…

Moderately Loud

Oak
Feadog
Susato (played well)

Loud

Susato (played badly)
Overton
Syn
Black Diamond

Even Louder than That

Cronnolly (M&E)

This is a duplicate thread. It might be more helpful to the original poster to look for the longer thread and add to it.

But that would be predictable.

Copeland - Volume, big presence, and conical tone.

Reyburn - Lovely tone and temperment, and plenty of power and volume when you call on it. (stuns a cat at 30 paces according to legend)

Old style Chieftain Sop’ D - loudest whistles on the planet
closely followed by
Alba - old style Bb - nearly as loud.

Both of my versions are a few years old now,
but bought precisely because the lesser volume
whistles were swallowed up as per your experience.

Wear ear defenders in confined spaces when playing the above

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

I’d also add Harper to those already mentioned. Just to say that my D Syn is not as loud as my Wide bore brass Burke. Maybe it’s only mine.

You should realize that the others could still hear you, in all likelihood. When there’s three or four fiddles, none of them can hear their own instrument as distinct from the blend (except on bum notes).

I don’t know if it’s the loudest, but I think the Sweetheart Pro is loud enough to be heard in a session.

And the sound is very good in the full range, no sharp or harsh.

Loudest = M&E.

But, if you want loud, many people go with the Susato (cheaper). The Chieftain can get the job done well too.

buy a Susato D is a monster!

Hi squeezebox99

Bloomfield is right, if there is one instrument you will hear in a session it is the whistle (or a set of GHB and even then you will hear the whistle).

My Reyburn Session D is plenty loud…and it sounds great. I also have a GFM D with a bore like a cannon and backpressure like a sax…it’s REALLY loud!
