Hello everyone,
I’m now looking for D & C tunable Whistles,
possibly a D one, with a C body.
I have a wonderful D overton but it’s sharp (+20/30 cents)
and I cannot play it with my Band and it’s quite hard in sessions.
I’ve seen the Susato whistles (C+D+Eb -->70$)
but I don’t like the plastic, so I’m looking for some alternatives!
I’ve seen the O’Brien Whistle Set on ebay (5 keys -->150$)
and I’m considering his wooden ones..(but I never try one of his instruments)
…
I like something like my Overton or an Abell or a Burke whistles
(so alluminium/solid metal/wooden/derlin materials)
but in order to save money a bit, I would like to have One head and Two body…
and I cannot ask to no others than you!

There are some methods of making a untunable whistle tunable to some extend.

I’ve read another article about this with pictures but I can’t find it anymore. It may ruin the whistle though so if you have two left hands like me don’t even think about trying it, heh.
I’ll probably ask to Colin Goldie to work on my D whistle…
but i like to play it “as it is” because it’s been a very special gift…
(so I cannot ruin it!!)
O’Brien wooden whistles seems not so bad, any comparision with
Overton or Abell ?
You can buy a Syn set, the C&D set is around $80. The Syn’s are my favorites right now.
Another good one is the Parks whistle. I have a D one and have ordered a C body last week. A D whistle and a C body would cost you $63.
I have an O’Brien set which I really like: you might find them a bit quiet with your band, though. They have a lovely tone. Mine are the metal ones, incidentally.
Not sure how old DevonDancer’s O’Brien whistles are, but I have a C/D set that is almost a year old that is pretty loud. I can’t compare it to an Overton or other high-end whistle, but it’s much louder than any of my cheapies. It’s a little loud for practicing inside, at least for me.
I bought the set because I had read that O’Brien whistles were sweet and fairly quiet, so I was surprised at the volume. David said that he had recently changed the design a bit to make them louder. It’s taken a little while to get used to (and I still honk the high A and B sometimes), but I love the tone of the set.
EDIT: Mine are nickel-plated copper BTW.

mmm
after a short study I think that wooden whistle by O’Brian are
longer better in sound then metal ones so they are VERY attractive!
and I’m convinced in buying at last a wooden D one in the future
but as I’m still a university student I have to wait a bit.
I’ve also considered the SYN ones, very nice and unexpensive but
the seems may too “Thin” for me, so
I probably have to look for second hand whistles…
just bought a second hand C whistle here on the forum
now I’m looking for a nice D offer ![]()
