Can anyone recommend a piece (or pieces) of classical (or baroque, or romantic, but I think you know what I mean) music suitable for playing on a keyless D Irish flute? I’m looking for a piece to play in church with my organist, and I’ve asked our music director to find some pieces, but everything she has which might have been appropriate is either in a bad key (flats and F-nats!) or has too many accidentals to be played cleanly.
I was thinking there must some baroque flute players out there who could recommend something. (Note: I don’t even have the E flat key).
Also, if you do have a suggestion, would you know where I could find a preview of the sheet music? I don’t want to go blindly ordering stuff, only to find that it won’t be playable for me. I don’t expect to get the sheet music for free, but previews really are a must.
Thanks in advance!
P.S. Feel free to PM if you don’t want to pollute this thread with possible commercial links.
Beethovan’s Ode to Joy from the 9th symphony works well and would be suitable I think. Then of course there’s Eine Kline Nacht music by Mozart. Also, though it’d be exactly unsuitable to the setting, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana plays easily.
Those and the Star Wars soundtrack are about all I’ve tried to play from the classical genre.
edit If you’re feeling brave, you could also try “Flight of the Bumblebee” by Rimsky-Korsakov.
Pachelbel’s Canon in D. The range is reasonable for a keyless flute. I’ve played a flute and guitar version so it would surely work for flute and organ.
It is strange, once I was practicing either “Drill Call” or “Retreat” and when I walked back up the stairs I found my mother-in-law humming the tune. Turns out that she had learned it as a hymn.
