Cillian Ó Briain only makes uilleann pipes in the key of D and and not in the key of C.

Cheers

You’ll be hard pressed to seperate O’Briain chanters from their owners fingers.

Try an Andy Faden chanter, it’s pretty close to an O’Briain chanter in looks, feel, sound and response. Ben was impressed at the NWUP tional last week.

Same with Mickey Dunne’s chanters

I loves me my O Briain chanter…Finding a used one would be an exercise in quixotic tomfoolery…That being said, if you’re looking for something O Briain-esque, Mickey Dunne, Andy Faden, and Gordon Galloway all seem to be trying their hand at making something similar in look and sound…

I ordered a new C chanter last september. Hmm.. it’s nearly done.

The old one isn’t going anywhere though

I haven’t tried Andy’s chanters yet; Gordon’s and Mickey’s do indeed seem very Cillian-esqe and the examples I’ve played recently have been quite good performers.

As I told Albert, I do actually have an O’Briain for sale. It’s some of his earlier work, it doesn’t have the big sound or tone of his recent work (rather stuffy to my ear), but its tuning is good[1] and the second octave is only a slight bump up from the first. It’s a good deal quieter than the usual O’Briain as well. Ebony, C and F keys, artificial ivory, wooden reed cap.

I paid too much for it, back when the options for good concert pitch chanters were a bit more limited than they are now; but it gave me a good 5 years or so of service, and suited me better than another ‘name brand’ chanter I had before. If someone really wants the O’Briain name and instant gratification, PM me with an offer.

[1] - Tuning is excellent except for a tendancy for the first octave F to be a shade flat. However I’ve never been able to get a third octave d out of it, with any reed, despite its having an otherwise cooperative second octave.
