Looking for a Uilleann Practice Set

I did a really stupid thing a few years ago. I had a Geoff Wooff practice set and I sold it. I had back problems and sitting was my enemy so playing the pipes was more pain than I could take.

I am now cured.

And I want to play again.

Does anyone know where I can get a decent new or used practice set??

My old set was Bb but I was thinking a D might allow be to be more social.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Hi,
I can offer you a practice set by McLaren. He is an Australian maker and he really is quite good. He has made no effort at achieving notoriety and thus most people don’t know of him but I assure you that his sets are fine. They don’t look nearly as aesthetically pleasing as a Wooff set but they play fine. My chanter is in D and is fully keyed. It is in perfect condition and is of ebony with holly turnings. I posted this for sale very recently and am in no hurry to sell it…whatever happens. I have another set already and have ordered a more “deluxe” set from rogge. Thus I have no need for this McLaren chanter. I can acquire a new bag and bellows from the maker in order to make it a practice set. The chanter itself is $850 Australian, which is quite cheap with exchange rates as they are. Anyway, I am genuine about the chanter being of quality etc but I really don’t want to do a hard sell so there it is. Good luck with your endeavours and bye for now.

Mitchell Macleod

All the best,

good suggestions already made.
for anyone who wants a practice set quickly, you should followup offers for either complete practice sets or offers of sale of chanters alone. if you score a nice chanter, even very good quality bag and bellows can be had quickly. pm me and i will give you several sources of very fine bags (waiting time 7-30 days) and bellows (waiting time 1-14 days)

3-4 months wait for a practice set.

… and an amazing pipemaker! A week ago I picked up my new half-set from Marc and I was deeply impressed by his craftsmanship and quick service. I hope to post some images the next days.

Those pipes have a great sound! And only like $5K for a full set!

There’s gotta be a catch…

I hate to say “I told you so…” but..
I hope you have a lot of fun with it Thies, but i’m sure you will hehe

Oh btw.., don’t photograph it.., play it!

… but it still looks so nice and shiny! I have to do it anyway … for the files and to make my fellow pipers here in Finland envious. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yup, a hardworking not much moneymaking pipemaker…
He just won’t listen when i tell him his prices are too low.

“Everyone who wants to should be able to buy a good set for a decent price, i payed a LOT of money for firewood when i started”
“People who have a set can wait a bit longer, beginners first, they have nothing yet” (on the short waiting list for practise sets)

I don’t think he would mind me quoting him here..

He’s just always working.., if anyone has the pipes virus..

I understand.. :stuck_out_tongue:
