Hello,
I live in Austin, TX. Does anyone know of some kind of list of people who play the whistle that might be online, or a registry or something? I am having trouble finding a teacher. Thanks in advance for any help.
Later,
Bala
Sorry, I don’t know of anyone or any online thing - but welcome to the board!!! ![]()

Bala,
I’m not from Austin but have do have some leads I’ve picked up on Irish music in the area.
From Irish America Net:
- Brew Zoo Cafe & Club, 16350 Blanco Rd., San Antonio, TX 78232-3337. Open music session Thursdays 7:30 p.m. Call 210-479-0066
- Opal Devine’s Freehouse, 619 W. 6th Street, Austin, TX. Austin Celtic Association Board meeting on 1st Monday of month, General Meeting on 2nd Wed of month; open music session Sundays.
- Quack’s 43rd St. Bakery, 411 East 43rd St., Austin, TX. Tune session 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. on first Sat of month. Call 512-453-3399
- Things Celtic, 911 North Lamar, Austin, TX. Tune session Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. Call 512-472-2358
Organizations from IAN:
- Austin Celtic Association (ACA), P.O. Box 68506, Austin, TX 78768–5069. The ACA promotes Irish, Scottish & Breton dance, music and educational organizations in the local area. ACA also produces an annual outdoor festival just outside of Round Rock, TX, usually around the second weekend of October. Call 512-443-5827; fax 512-447-0987.
- Conradh na Gaeilge (The Gaelic League), P.O. Box 7215, Austin, TX 78713-7215. The Gaelic League was founded in Ireland in 1893 by Douglas Hyde and others with the aim of preserving Irish as the national language and the extension of its use as the spoken tongue in Ireland. The League also promoted the publication of existing Gaelic literature and the cultivation of a modern literature in Irish. Today, chapters and extensions of the League exist in many countries throughout the world and continue its goals and objectives. Visit the League’s web site at http://www.serve.com/gla/, and learn more about its activities and schedule of classes in Gaelic.
- Texas Celtic Music Network (TCMN), c/o Larry Rone, 1500 W. William Cannon, #205, Austin, TX 78745. Dedicated to helping the Celtic musician and interested others find information on music resources and venues in the Southwest.
From Folk & Roots Online Guide (FROG):
- Art’s Rib House, 2330 South Lamar Boulevard 78704, Austin, 442-8283 Tuesday nights - fiddler’s jam session.
- Colorado St. Cafe, 705 Colorado St., Austin Scottish-Irish jam on Mondays 7:30 pm. Everyone welcome.
- Dog & Duck, 406 West 17th Street 78701, Austin, 479-0598 (near downtown) Friday evenings (early) - Bagpipe & drum practice.
- Draught Horse Pub & Brewery, 4112 Medical Parkway, Austin Monday & Wednesday nights - Irish jam session. “Austin’s best session venue yet”. “Mostly Irish but also Scottish, Welsh, quite a bit of Breton, even Galician.” Very smokey bar, despite the “no smoking near the musicians” sign.
- McGillicuddy’s, 619 Congress Ave, Austin No regular session but this venue fills in when other venues are not available. Sometimes there are weekday sessions but none on a regular basis.
- Draught Horse Pub. 4112 Medical Parkway, Austin. MONDAY nights, 8:30-? Hosted by Austin’s own" Crazy Jane & the Bishop." Austin’s best session venue yet; Irish atmosphere in a brew pub w/ more than 30 beers on tap (free for musicians) Runs the gauntlet of the Celtic tradition: mostly Irish but also Scottish, Welsh, quite a bit of Breton, even Gallician, & sometimes Cajun(?!).Contact: Larry Rone (LRONE@HRW.COM) or (512) 443-5225
- O’Bryan’s Pub & Grill. 619 Congress Ave. Austin. WEDNESDAY nights from 8:30-? New Irish pub with full menu and bar. Sessions just getting started, but looks like a good crowd most nights. Free beer for musicians. Several of Austin’s Celtic bands represented. Tune in later for updates. (512) 476-4764 or (rarii@io.com)
- Senor O’Brien’s Restaurant. 624 W. 34th St. Austin, (512) 451-9555. Every SATURDAY night from 8:00-? Number & proficiency of musicians varies widely, but sometimes a really great session in which folks from all over show up.
Some of the leads are older and may no longer be valid. You should also check http://www.sessioneer.com as a source for tutorial info and sessions. Someone from Austin might be able to point you to more viable leads or give you additional information but in the mean time I Hope this helps you find what you need.
And remember to …
