I visited some of the thrift stores in town the other day looking for a cetain kind of thin leather (for a flap valve), and it occured to me that certain purses might work nicely for bellows material. Didn’t see any big enough for a bag.
Are there other recycle sources like this for small pieces of thinner type leather, finished on one side? Jackets? Saddles–for thicker pieces? How about upholstery from auto-wrecking places? Upholstery from old worn leather couches?
I realize vinyl works too for bellows, perhaps even better, but specifically wondered about leather sources.
Lorenzo I use leather from recycled sources (Jackets etc) from the charity shops on bellows.I make the bellows from vinyl then cover the whole lot in the recycled leather,
I think the leather would be far to thin on its own as it tears very easily and would break down but it looks very good cosmetically. So when I gaze fondly at people wearing leather in Glasgow I am thinking what they would look like as bellows(the Clothes) !!

Hi
As a newcomer to the forum (I’ve been lurking for a while) I thought I’d chip in here.
I’ve been quite succesfull in using leather from an old sofa for a bellows. It is just the right thickness, and completely airtight. It was a bit strange crawling around in a waste container with a large knife though…
Nice web site from the Uilleann Pipers Club in Danmark! Hope you don’t mind if I post a picture from your web, but I was curious about this set of pipes…
Who’s the maker, I have a hunch just from the looks of them.
Do you use elder reeds much? BTW, did you ever find that Dave Williams chanter you were looking for?
Hope you enjoy C&F, there’s getting to be quite a few new members, and great contributers to the forum.
Lorenzo , be sure to check for chump change in the purses . Also , the set in the pic looks like Arie De Keyser , very good work .
Tok. lol… Oh , Whats the difference between a champ and a chump ? U . wink , . lol.

Hi all
Tanks for the the warm welcome. The set in the picture is in fact Brian McNamara’s Geoff Woof C-set. The picture was taken by my good friend Paul Eliasberg from the dutch pipers club. Their website has more pictures of the set. Our own website is still a work in progress so it is not fully functioning yet. As soon as I get the time…
I gave up finding a Williams chanter, I’ll just have to wait untill it’s my turn a couple of years…
AKA Dodge Colt and Cricket in Canada. Made by Mitsubishi.
I remember these well. They sold like hotcakes. There was a truck model called the Scamp. They changed the name to Plymouth Colt when I started selling 'em in 1984.

Good thing they changed the name. I’d be insulted if some little weasel looking thing was named after my Studebaker Champ. (cudos for the lady’s behind though)hehe, thanks Paul. I got mine from my uncle about 12 years ago, he bought it new. There ain’t nothin like 'em.
Lorenzo , I found a really good leather shop in philadelphia . they dont have everything you need to make a set of pipes , but they have it close , and they could tell you where to go to get what they dont have . It is savadge leather in philadelphia . I used to go there on the weekends to find scrap leather to make a pipe bag . They helped me to get started on the hand stiching , and the thickness of the leather , and the grades of the leather . They actually stock goat skin , and the thickness is just right for making a double layer pipebag . Tom Standeven told me that that is what the old boys used since it had just the right spring to the leather . Most pipemakers use cow hide since it is much easier , mabey in the long run , the goat skin would save a few pulled muscles and give the right perspective on the arm pressure ect , to run a set o pipes . The old makers would use a template called a last to make the bag , I found that to simply fold a cow hide over and seal it does not give the finished bag the correct shape and it loses ergonomics in a big way .
I see the pipes as an art and therefor integral , in that if they are done well , and this has been said here before , that the pipes are only as good as the worst part . I take it with a grain of salt.
tom . p.s. The leather shop is 4 new york blocks from the waterfront district . There are still some shops there that cater to the shipping trade , i.e. sailmakers and ship hardware supplies . I heard that the taylor brothers used to have to make a tool to make a tool . So that they could make the uillean pipes . I lived in the area where they had there shop . There was an old storefront and I would wonder If that was there shop , or very close to it . Down near the free library .
ect , ect , I lived in the area of phila that was once an irish area . And still is to some degree . That area is within walking distance of the taylor bros , shop . There are some old brick shops there that may have been theres or , there shop may have been next door and then torn down . small world at times . . There is an actress who is from that area and she played in the back to the future films . I will post the name of the area soon it slipps my mind at the moment . There is a full set of taylors at the mercer museaum in a town 40 mins. from phila . I heard , somewhere , that the reeds were all stolen by a piper who was playing on a similar set . There is also a taylor chanter in the museam and it is in the back of a diplay showing arifacts made with ivory . I suppose the extra chanter was put there since it had Ivory on it .

Tom, I had you figured for a sedan guy. But if you’re sure you can handle a car like this I can personally guarantee that you’d be the talk of the town pulling up at the soccer fields in a brand new champ. Now, lets see… If the price and terms are right are you prepared to own the car today? Of course, I’ll have to present your offer to my manager but he’s really taking some deals today!
Look , Paul , I am willing to do in house financing here , I want my dream car , what can we do ? Will you take my 5 speed turbo as a trade ? What do you have on the back lot ?? lol.
