This recording of the tune “The Eagle’s Whistle,” the lullaby version, has three whistles in the following order:
–Clarke original D
–Serpent Tunable Copper D
–Oak D

These are three of my “sweetest” sounding whistles, though the Oak does have a bit more chiff than the other two.

Nice, James. I especially like the timbre of the Clarke Orig. and the Serpent whistles… I’m also searching my bookmarked Tune Archives for that tune- very beautiful and haunting.
Brings up an interesting topic though, are whistlers going to have to start searching through the Clarke origs like they do through the Gens? (I got a D in painted livery and it sounds lovely- not too breathy- but the other D I got in nat. finish is so breathy it borders on raspy.)

I very much appreciate this kind of post. I haven’t yet had a chance to try a Clark original D (someone’s mailing me a hand-me-down), but I’ve heard two clips recently (this one and one on http://www.hooleymusic.com), and they both impressed me.
I’m interested in the inexpensive whistles, and how they might be tweaked to bring out their full potential. I, also, would like to know the answer to the question of variability among Clark original D’s.

I have an old Clarke C (very old) which is quite breathy and raspy.
All of my new Clarkes have been quite sweetly voiced, though.
They are great whistles, but somewhat fragile due to the wooden block.
