L.E. McCullough, what's he playing?

He’s playing some species of aluminum Burke.
Anybody know whether it’s narrow bore or session?

On the Burke Whistle site, under the review section, he talks about the Burke DASBT Aluminum. http://www.burkewhistles.com/pages.php?pageid=2 Here on C&F he’s talked about a Burke Bnat that he likes (also on the Burke website), and I’ve seen this picture where I"m pretty sure he has a Burke Brass D

He’s posted recently to the forums so you can ask him yourself.

I’m playing a brass Burke. That photo was taken of in October, 1999. Wow, how tempus fugits!

I’m playing an aluminum Burke these days. Loving it!

I’ve been mostly stuck doing theatre stuff the last while, but I’m darn sure going to be out live and in person at the AOH ceili in Somerville, NJ Sunday Oct. 28 to see Tony DeMarco receive a Lifetime Irish Traditional Music Achievement Award.

I guarantee it’s going to be a fine session!

Stop in if you’re in the neighborhood.

Do you play the session or the narrow bore?

Thanks,

Nate

Same question.

elloo I’m not LE, obviously, but to save on multiple posts  I could mention first he played the narrow but then when it came out played the thicker one, the “session” one.
Cheers, Lesl

what she said. . . yes, I’m using the bigger bore now, and it sounds pretty good.

Even with the best of makers, these whistles are so individualized – as are the people who play them.

I went to Michael Copeland’s shop in Philly about 10 years ago (he’s in NJ now), and he let me sample about five dozen newly made whistles laid out on a big table – all ostensibly the same model, same key. Each was different.

I feel that Burkes vary, though not by a lot. The best whistle I own is the one I chose from several when i met Mike at the SF Tionol.

I strongly urge any of you who live in the Midwest or East, and have a chance to meet Mike at a show or festival to buy that way. Or any whistle maker for that matter. And you have to overcome your shyness or intimidation and realize that you are the customer after all, even if the whistle you are meeting for the first time is infinitely better than what you had before.

That’s why it’s hard to want to order sight unseen since then, from anybody, really. I know I will get a good and reliable product, but you never know what subtle thing might suit one a bit better. Mike can adjust things (beats me exactly what he does), but you can get a better idea of what you like or dislike when you have a few to choose from and to compare to. That’s how I made my choice.

Right now (11:16 pm EST), I’m playing the whistle I keep handy at my desk. . . I believe it’s an O’Riordan, and it has a nice soft, full sound.

By the way, it is just me or does L.E. look like Murdock from Rambo 2 in that first picture?

In order to refresh your memory:

I couldn’t find a picture of him with the glasses on.

resemblance is startling – both are armed and wearing neckties.

whistle on!
