In an effort to maintain peace in spite of my whistle hobby, I have taken it upon myself to learn some of my husband’s favorite tunes from over the years. I have done this as an act of good faith, extending the olive branch of nostalgia. Thus, I have learned to play the following:
The Hobbit theme - Lord of the Rings
Hymn of the Fayth- Final Fantasy X
Inner Light - Star Trek Next Gen.
(Scifi/Fantasy themes cover a multitude of second register sins… one can hope!)
Don’t extend an olive branch-- extend him a whistle! See if you can’t entice him to learn to play. Playing music with someone you love is just about the best thing there is.
I do quite a few gigs where people ask for things like music from Titanic and Braveheart and I’ve written those out and play them when required, but I’ve not yet been asked to play any of those mentioned.
I seem to be in the minority in that I found the score of LOTR pedestrian and unmemorable. I was quite disappointed in fact, because the books are so effective at transporting the reader to another world, and I expected the music to help effect this in the movies. What I heard was instead a typical Hollywood score. How different from composer Bear McCreary who doesn’t hesitate to incorporate exotic ethnic influences and instruments (Battlestar Galactica).
My son, who plays piano, is a huge fan of many of the musical pieces found in various video games, and he’ll often summon me over to the computer to listen to a piece he finds particularly nice. I don’t recall offhand that Final Fantasy X piece but I’m sure it’s one of the ones he’s pointed out to me. Some of those games hire excellent composers.
