CBS Morning show this morning she will be performing and the quick preview showed her playing a whistle if you tune in right now you might get to see her! She is country! Whistle addiction is growing!
Edited to add this:
Sorry about that! She didn’t perform with her whistle during the last hour! She did say that her new CD has a Celtic feel to it. What she played this morning sounded country to me. Oh well, Sorry for that!

In Ken Burns’ Songs of the Civil War video, she played guitar but was backed by a band that included a hammered dulcimer and a whistle (Feadog or Walton, I think - brass tube, green fipple).
I believe Kathy is personal friends with Scottish singer dougie MacLena and has recorded a couple of his songs. She goes to his place in scotland frequently and vice versa. Probably where she picked it up.

When she was being interviewed she mentioned that she frequently went to visit a friend in Scotland so this could very well be true. In the interview they also discussed her New CD and she said it has a Celtic sound to it.
Yeah she does a good cover of Dougie Maclean’s " Ready for the Storm ". He also plays rythym guitar on that track. Here’s a list of the songs on her new CD( guess we don’t call them Albums anylonger)
That’s All The Lumber You Sent
They Are The Roses
Guns of Love
Ashes In The Wind
I’m Alright
Till I Turn To You
Come Away With Me
Who We Are
Junkyard
Isle Of Inishmore - Part 1 (Air)
Isle of Inishmore - Part 2 (Jig)
Seems kinda’ celtic right here.

About 4-5 years ago, she did another album including some mcLean songs (e.g. Ready for the Storm) and also including The Man himself playing pipes. It was the first exposure I’d had to modern piping and my jaw dropped. I didn’t think bagpipes could DO that. The album overall was very good, to the point where I still occasionally hum some of the songs although the tape has long since worn to the point of near-unplayability.
I just hunted out my Kathy Mattea CD’s and found the “Time Passes By” CD. It has “From A Distance” on it and it has a Whistle at the beginning of the song and Pipes and Whistle at the end! Dougie Plays an Overton Whistle and Gary West Plays the Pipes. Great sounds!
Phizzy,
Do you have the new CD? And do you know what the title of the new CD is? I will have to find it!

Here’s a small-world item for you. Bobby Horton is a musician who has been the key figure in just about every Ken Burns documentary soundtrack. He’s a multiinstrumentalist who plays the whistle (Susato). He records his contributions to the soundtracks at his home studio. Small world? He lives about a block away from my office in Birmingham.
