I’ve been learning to play (2 weeks now) on the copper whistle built from the Kim Fulton-Bennett plans and decided to get a manufactured whistle as a comparison/companion. They are so different in sound and texture I find myself playing both while practicing my limited songbook.
Ahhh the O’Briain Improved D has been my favorite whistle for years now. I got this little black fipple baby a few years ago from the whistleshop.com and havent played a whistle I prefered since then… well, only one, but it pains me to think about it, because only the death of it’s owner will allow me to play it one day, and he’s a good friend, so I don’t want his death
that’s good to know. I didn’t realize they were sold anywhere in the US. I bought mine in Ireland a few years ago and I love it. it’s the only high D whistle I have, and in my experience I have yet to play one that I’ve liked any better.
I just got an O’Briain improved Eb from whistle and drum. My daughter ordered for me for Fathers day. It is a very nice sounding whistle. For those not familiar with this whistle it is a Feadog head and a Generation Brass tube. Both the tube and head have been modified to give a better balanced and intune whistle. I think this will become one of my regular whistles now. I like the key of Eb and Feadog is one of my favorite whistles.
My O’Briain Eb is louder than my Feadog Ds. The sound is more like a Feadog than a Generation but it has a brightness that is somewhat different from the Feadog or the Generation.
