well I’ve been on the board for a couple o’ days now complaining about the crummy C on my sweet-tone and I just learned “Brown Colleen” (star of the county down) and I’m officially hooked!!! this is the first song I’ve played that actually sounds cool, as opposed to playing christmas carols, twinkle twinkle, happy b-day etc which is all I’ve been doing so far. Is there any way to slide a note (not sure if that the right term or not?) other than when transfering from 2 different notes (i.e. D to an E) can you slide from the same note to the same note (say a B to a B?)

welcome vaulter, I guess it’s too late for you to drop your whistle and turn around and not look back, your tough luck.
If you want to go from D to E smoothly you can do that by gradually sliding your right ringfinger off the D hole, thereby slowly opening it.
there are are lots of other little tricks of the trade too, I’m sure others will chime in here too..

My “Mel Bay’s Complete Irish Tin Whistle Book” says to do a slide “by gradually sliding the finger off a tone hole. The slide can only occur between two adjacent notes [for example between G and A]…”; .basically what Amar said

You can’t slide from a note to itself. You can slip a little cut in there, however, if you want to ornament or somehow separate two or more of the same note.

I don’t recommend this, but you can slide from note to note by slowly covering and uncovering the first open hole. Like a little dip: A slide down and up again. Say you’re playing a B, slide your L2 finger onto the A hole and slide it off again.
As I said, being able to do it is not necessarily reason enough to actually do it.

Aw, c’mon! Why not? The last I heard, you can’t be arrested and charged with anything if you do this! May get you kicked out of a seisiun, though!
