Just a thought???

Has anyone ever tried “D” smallpipe drone’s with their Uilleann pipes??? :tomato:

I have wondered the same thing. I would think that the chanter would drown out the drones though, maybe I’m wrong. It might just be a perception thing.

Most of the SSPs I’ve seen join directly into the bag. You’d have to figure a way to connect the SSP chanter to the UP bag.

Unless they were talking about the other way around?

Apologies, I meant the SSP bag and the UP chanter.

Joe Kennedy’s D sets are designed with smaller bore drones to balance to his medium bore chanters. Some folks want a real loud honking sound from their sets, and while Joe can make these for you if you request them, he normally goes for a sweeter sounding chanter and smaller bore drones to balance. I suppose this is a matter of personal taste.

I’m talking about just taking a set of smallpipe drones(with plug style drone stock like the Walsh SSP’s , or not, and tie them into a UP bag…

I don’t know of anyone using this combination. Pipemaker Colin Jerry has made Uilleann sets with drones based on the Northumbrians. However these have a wider bore and are longer than smallpipe drones for any given note, giving a bigger sound at a higher air pressure (presumably). My guess is that you would need to use a soft chanter reed or a narrow bore chanter, or even both, to get a balanced sound and to avoid the drones clapping shut because of too much air pressure. Ray Sloan makes narrow bore chanters as well as smallpipes so is in a good position to experiment, if you can persuade him.
