Just a thank you and a question!

Hello everyone,

First off, a while back I posted a thread asking what tune book would be the best to offer the most popular session tunes. A few of you suggested “110 Ireland’s Best Session Tunes”. I purchased the book last week and have already learned three tunes, and am currently working on two more. I am having a lot of fun with it and I just wanted to thank you guys for recommending it.

Secondly, I have a question! I am learning the very last tune in the book titled “Tabhair Dom do Lamh” and it has an F natural in it. I have never had to play an F natural before, so don’t know the fingerings for it. If someone could tell me, I’d really appreciate it.

On a side note – did anyone see Crossroads on CMT with the Dixie Chicks and James Taylor? I tuned in to watch a bit of it and on the last song they played, “Ready to Run”, there was a pennywhistle in it! At the very last of the song, you could really hear the whistle and it was SO pretty! Unfortunately, I was not able to identify what type of whistle it was; it was silver and from I can recall the body looked similar to a Clarke. Just wondering if anyone saw this.

Have a great week, everyone!

Peace and harmony,
Sara

Colin Goldie makes a a really nice D whistle with a thumbhole for F natural. Alternately you can half hole the E hole.
Best,
Chris

Surprisingly, some whistles will allow a cross-fingering for F natural (xxx xox), while others will not - e.g. Sweetone YES, Copeland NO, Thin Weasel YES. You still have to adjust marginally using breath pressure.

Sara, half holing the 5th (F#)hole is the way to play F on a D whistle.A good trick is to press your 2nd finger against your 1st finger on your lower hand. There is no real way to cross finger Fnat on a D whistle. Mike

Are we playing different D whistles? On all mine, the fifth hole is the E hole, not the F# hole.

Half holing the E hole would give you an E# if there was such a thing, as it is you get a Fnat.
Take care, Johnz

I saw that Dixie Chicks/James Taylor show (only because I’m a huge JT fan, but was dissapointed he did not sing more of his own work), anyway, I could not get a good enough look at the whistle to identify it, but you’re right, it sounded good.

To avoid confusion XXXXOO plays F# and covering the top of the next open hole(5) plays Fnat. You are right of course, covering the 5th hole plays E,thanks for noticing my error. Mike
