Howdy, I’m a fairly new whistler (about 9 months), I’ve posted a few things here, but this is the first evidence that I actually play the blasted things. I’ve got several high D whistles (my favorite right now is the tweaked Shaw, although I re-tweaked it slightly), and a few Cs and other miscellaneous keys.
A month ago or so, since it was a mere $18, I decided to give one of Daniel Bingamon’s Jubilee “Practice” low D whistles a try. Since then I’ve spent a total of 3 hours tops with it, but since someone asked for sound samples, I thought I’d post something at least. I’m more into the dancing-skirling sound of high whistles, but I’m always ready to play with a new toy.
The whistle does take a LOT of air, as someone mentioned. Play a Whitecap after this thing, and it feels like you’re holding your breath! I’ll probably try thinning the airway a bit to see what happens. But here’s what the unaltered thing sound like in my hands (and lips). I recorded it with a decent mic (an AKG C2000S) in a dry room, 2 to 3 feet away.
I don’t play many “slow airs,” but the ballad “Lady Franklin’s Lament” sounded pretty nice to me in practice. It has a longish C-Natural (fingered 0xx 000), which sounds pretty in-tune, but a little “strained” (which seems to be usual with a cross-fingered C-natural.) The air requirements caused some re-arrangement of the phrasing, excuse the gasping. The second tune is the “Huntsmen’s Chorus,” an old tune that’s a bit more sprightly.
I played with my fingertips, the reach is pretty easy. But my thumbs feel slightly cramped from supporting the whistle (holding it too tight, I guess). I think it’d be a lot easier to hold if I covered the lower hole (stabilizing the whistle with my pinkie) when playing A or above, but I’m not used to that. I tried it a little though, and it sounded fine that way.
I hope this helps somone out a little bit. I think it has a pretty nice sound, with a bit of air, although it’s a little plasticky sounding. But hey, it’s only $18, just buy one and try it yourself!
