John Coltrane on Irish flute

I just posted a video of John Coltrane’s Naima to my youtube channel and thought I would share it here! This is actually the first in a series of videos I will be posting of traditional and cover material on various instruments. I have some trad stuff on flute waiting in the wings so I will post links to those videos when they have been posted too. Hope you enjoy!

And there I thought, for a moment, they had found a follow up to his penny whistle tapes.

Unseen - your playing is certainly lovely, and you have nice flute tone, but when I compared your version to the original, I really noticed the lack of the reedy buzz that 'Trane managed. In fact, despite the abundant virtues of your recording, I’m not sure that this piece works without the frisson of excitement that the buzz provides.

But thank you.

That’s a classic!

i enjoyed the clip - i take it that a lot of keyed notes were needed?

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, lots of keywork involved, the tune is essentially in Eb minor so it requires a lot of notes outside of the basic scales.

i also like your playing of the hop jig on your page, very breathy and rhythmic

Thanks!

Forgot, I posted some jigs on my Burns Bb last week.
