Hi, hope it’s OK to ask another question. Does anyone know if James Galway (the Irish flautist) ever made whistles or gave his name to a brand of whistles? I’ve bought a second hand whistle showing his signature? angled round the body of the whistle. Black plastic head, not sure about the body - some sort of silvery/greyish metal. Although not damaged in any way, it looks like it’s had a hard life (or it may just be old) but it has a good scale & a nice sound. Any info appreciated. Many thanks. ![]()
Short answer..yes.

Thank you very much for that information & link, Wanderer. I really appreciate your help in posting a reply. Now that I know there was a James Galway whistle, I’ll see if I can find anything else about it. It appears from the link that it dates from the 70’s - which accounts for it’s worn appearence. Now to see if I can find out who the actual manufacturer was, and why (presumably) they stopped making them & when. Thanks again!
The Galway whistle was (I´m 99% sure) made by the same factory that makes the Generation whistle. My own guess is that it was made during a short span of probably not more than few years. It was probably sold in some form of gift set together with a booklet “The James Galway Method”, which was nothing more than a presentation of James Galway, a fingering chart and 11 well known irish tunes.
The Galway whistle is a very good whistle. I think it´s slightly better than a standard Generation whistle. Perhaps they where made from different moulds or something. Or I might just possibly imagine things…
Hi Falkbeer, Thank you for your feedback. Wanderer’s link did bring me to your original posting but I managed to misread it. I somehow read it as ‘similar to’ Generation rather than ‘is’. I think I was so excited to get a reply that I flew at it all, instead of reading it properly! Although I’m still pretty knowledge-less about whistles, the JGW feels nice (if that doesn’t sound too silly?) & I’m hoping to be able to produce some good sounds from it - if not, the lack will be in me rather than the whistle I think. Thanks again for your time.
