But what a bad way to start off the buying frenzy with an M&E, cause you won’t really need to buy any more flutes in ages (of course “won’t need” and “cannot” are two different things)
God help me. I have at least 50 whistles, and now I’m spending as much time on the flute as I am whistle.
Flutes are cheap arn’t they? I can get, like a generation flute for ten bucks? Feadog makes flutes, right?
Actually it’s worse than a paki flute - for the past 3 hours I;ve been driving my housemates nuts with that Cooperman fife I’ve been babbling about in the other thread. They’re tolerant though. It’s quiet compared to my guitars in crank mode.
So my newb set list of tunes to learn initially follows:
Farewell to Erin (which absolutely rocks on GHB as a fast reel with a talented snare in the background)
Banish misfortune
Jolly beggarman. THis is the riff I play when I go to guitar stores on tire-kicking missions. The salesdrones appreciate that it isn;t Metallica.
Rakish Paddy
Morrison’s
FOr old-timers these are probably snoozers but it’s nice to pick up tunes one’s heard all the time.
Ha! Nice try. Flutes are actually much cheeper… they’re made from wood for God’s sake! If you’re in a rush, just go break a branch of a tree and boke seven holes in it. Brand new flute, voila!
Unfortunately I live in an apartment with absolutely no control over heat or humidity. It’s on the second floor of an old house, and my neighbors control the thermostat:( The temp can go from upper 50s in the mornings (if the heat is cycling wrong on a cold night) to upper 70’s or more between the time I leave for work and the time I return. . . and from insane, stick-to-the chair humidity to bone dry just as quickly. I wont get another high-end wooden instrument until I have some better control over the environment.
Wood is really nice, but my main priority is not the material, other things matters just as much or more. I am of the belief that different materials makes a difference in sound but I do think that the design of the flute accounts for a lot more of the difference. I don’t think polymer has less good tonal qualities, it’s just slightly different, but only so slightly. If I were to pick a material for Terry McGee (for example) to make me a flute of, I’d certainly not pick polymer over wood, becauce wood is nicer, but it really doesn’t matter all that much. The fact that the M&E is such a lovely flute with so much capability, and maintenance free makes the polymer loveable in it’s own way.
Bruce Gandy is my personal deity:) That was a groundbreaking album when it came out. It also just flat-out smokes. Great CD. I have William Livingstone’s tune collection too. There’s a lot of fun stuff in it.
How do you find going from having a bag for air relief to phrasing your breaths? That was the biggest GHB-to-flute adjustment for me.
Cheers,
Aaron
Well, since I don;t own a flute yet, ???
I did play a recorder though in college, so it’s not totally foreign. On whistle (which I hack at) I can manage with a tune I know well.
