That’s cool. I hope he seriously wants to learn because I miss a jam friend. Mine has quit playing.
I actually took up fiddling instead of whistling, but I’ll probably start whistling again in the future.
I’m not sure that many people on the board have tried this whistle. The last time I heard, Cillian O Briain was using Feadog whistles in his tweaks. If you are looking for a good generation, I would like to suggest you check

I have no personal experience with Jerry Freemans whistles either, but he
comes highly recommeded by several people on this board. An anyone who will put up with a mouse as a shop assistant is good people.

I have an O’Brian improved Eb and it’s a great whistle, very fast and expressive. It’s a Generations body with a tweaked Feadog head. I haven’t tried his D, but as i said, the Eb is very good, indeed.

I don’t know about the low D, but I have a soprano D which, like the Eb, is very good indeed. It has lightning fast response but requires more attention to breath control than some people like. It has the traditional tin whistle sound, but it is fairly quiet, more suitable for solos than for playing with a group.
Cillian O Briain improved whistles are lovely whistles, one very fine whistleplayer I know bought one and said she preferred it much over a Burke that was left at her house by a US pupil, saying you can’t beat it and you don’t have to pay a ridiculous price for it. Ossian is selling them for 17.83 Euro, which is just over half SOME on-line shops are selling them for and less than half the price of the other tweaker. Can’t go wrong there I would think.

anyone knows of the difference between the impoved generation D and the improved Feadog D ?
“generation D” needs generations to be able to play..
The O Briain Improved has become a bit of a hybrid, the last batch I saw had D’ with a gen body and a Feadog head and eflats with the gen head and the feadog body [or maybe it was the other way around but he had swapped them around]. Whatever the way, it’s as fine a whistle as you may find.

Go for it! I have the improved D, and it sounds wonderful. As for the difference between that and the regular Feadog, the improved one is more in tune, based on the ones I have and compared. Enjoy!
Here’s a serious proposal. Let’s all make sure we purchase a Generation unimproved, an O’Brien improved and a Freeman improved. Then let’s spend a few months comparing them.
