It appears that most whistlers play other musical instruments. I’m curious. What other instruments do you play?
Since this is my poll, I’ll go first. I mainly play guitar on stage with my band, but manage to work pennywhistle, flute, double ocarina, melodica, (and soon Xaphoon), into our sets. (We’re a Hawaiian band, that plays whatever style takes our fancy…)
At home I mainly play the English Concertina. I only touch my guitars and ukes at home when I’m teaching. I own a whole bunch of other musical instruments: steel drum, steel guitar, harp, autoharp, Anglo concertina, accordion, keyboard, bodhran (sp?), zither and will occassionaly go off on “instrumental binges”.
My collapsible Laughing Whistle goes with me everywhere I go.
I also play flute (a Dixon polymer),but also have a very cheap Chinese Boehm flute( which I never touch)and an Alto Sax (Conn ‘Lady’ underslung,c.1935)which I haven’t played for quite some time, but would never part with. I’ve recently ordered a practice set of Uilleann pipes from Davy Stephenson.
Ha Ha, I also have a Jaw harp that I can get a “Boing” out of, but I wouldn’t call it playing. There are a few others that I want to try like the autoharp and the mountain dulcimer. Practice, Practice, Practice…
Flutes & Percussion: Boehm flute, recorders (garklein through tenor), tabor pipe, assorted fifes, ocarinas, hand percussion - right now I have a doumbek, cowbell, assorted shakers…Oh! and I just got a quena! I also have a clarinet staring at me at the moment, and in the past I’ve messed with trubador harp, euphnium, and piano.
Looking around my music room, I see eight guitars, calrinet, a gig-bag of pennywhistles, a BOX of pennywhistles, Wurlitzer 200A electric piano, Ace Tone transistor organ, autoharp, Bodhran, mandolin,a Remo 16" hand drum, glockenspiel (SP?) Fender bass guitar, a home-brew flute and…
Piano
Organ
Clarinet
Eb Clarinet (yes it’s a different instrument)
Assorted Saxophones
Oboe
Marimba (only percussion I actually practice on)
assorted percussion
… right and whiste.
Only ones I get paid for are keyboards and reeds though. Nobody needs marimba players.
Well Im almost imbarised that my list only contains a guitar and a flute. Although I can truethfully say I was once a guitarist I cannot say I am a flutist or floutest er a flute player. I was informed this very day that my Dixon rosewood flute is in the mail. :astonished: and I am shaking with antisipation. I havent played my guitar in quite a while though and the whistle and flute have occupied all my musical time of late. Thanks to you all. Oh ya I have played the Jews harp since I was a kid and the spoons. Both of which my mother tought to me. She tried to teach me how to play the harmonica and piano but I was a very poor student. I kick myself daily for not taking advantage of that oppertunity now that she is gone. She had a great style of playing and now it is lost.
My short list consists of clarinet, bass clarinet, and my vocal cords. I have a Hall flute and a bodhran, but I can’t really say that I actually play them!
