Is Joanie's whistle wood or metal?

I just had the delightful experience of hearing Cherish the Ladies twice in one day – in a small afternoon workshop then in a concert tonight. I think I saw one Sindt among a bunch of what I assume were O’Riordans. I recall reading here that Joanie’s O’Riordans are metal, but these were black with silver – looked like wood. And sounded fabulous (though that probably had something to do with the person playing them  ).

Does anyone know whether she’s playing wood?

Tery

I would expect her to play a vast array of whistles.

Hi Teri,

Check my post about O’Riordans if you haven’t already. She does indeed still play O’Riordans, and uses the ‘Traveller’ series, which are black anodized aluminum and black delrin plastic. So while from a short distance they may appear to be ebony or blackwood, they are in fact aluminum.

Tery . I too saw Joanie just recently and had the opportunity to talk to her at a local pub after the gig. I asked her about that “very” Stindt looking whistle as well. She told me it was a Burke that she and Mike had benn working on. She told me everything she played that night was either a Burke or an O’Riordan. She was a cless act on stage and off. She even said goodbye to me by name when my wife and I left the pub.

I also had a chat with Pat O’Riordan himself about Joanie’s whistles, and he said he has only ever sold her metal ones (aluminium).

It was the black color that confused me – I expected aluminum to be silver-colored. Boy would I love to try one of those. I expect getting on O’Riordan’s list is somewhat futile at this point, but those are gorgeous-sounding whistles. (Yeah, I know, it won’t sound the same with me playing it – I can dream.)

Talking at a pub afterward would have been wonderful! Cherish the Ladies is on a busy road trip, though, and they were heading out to catch a 4 A.M. flight out of Baltimore.

Hey tkelly,

I would say go ahead and get on Pat O’riordan’s waiting list. You’ve got nothing to lose and they are worth the wait!
