Introduction

Hello, all
My name is Phillip, I’m from Middle Tennessee. I am a graduate student in mechanical engineering. I recently picked the tin whistle back up after many years. The fiddle/violin is my first instrument, which I picked up again recently as well. Like many people I’m working through the Clark book and really enjoying it. I got started in 2012 after attending an Irish music workshop. My first whistle was an Oak D, which I tweaked by making tuneable (wasn’t tuneable to start with), and adding puddy to that dead space in the back. I really love this whistle. I even prefer it to my Freeman Bluebird, even though that one is a tad easier to play, I love the chiffier, brighter tone of the Oak. I also have a Dixon low D whistle, and a high D pennywhistle I made myself recently (I’ll post about that later). I also must mention that I had a Syn high D whistle which was given to me as a gift way back in 2013/2014, I believe. Unfortunately it got stolen at an Irish workshop.

Anyway, just wanted to do an introduction since I will be posting about some other stuff on here. I am getting interested in whistle keys other than D, and later I want to share my DIY whistle with yall and get some advice.

Welcome! I’ve only been making noise with a tin whistle for a few months, and my focus is getting to a point where my family tolerates my playing. I’ve experimented with PVC whistles and tweaks to make my whistle sound better (and less loud). I’m looking forward to reading about your whistles!

Mike

Phillip, welcome! Always fun to pick the whistle back up after a break. Enjoy!

Welcome aboard.

Welcome aboard! I, too, recently returned to the whistle after an absence (and a shift in priorities; perhaps I’ll elaborate on that later). I’d be interested to see the whistle you made yourself.

Edit: I have seen the post that details the aforementioned self-made whistle.
