Hello All

Hello All

I have just joined the memberlist, having been referring to and reading this site immensely after my recent dive into whistling. I already have to thank everyone for their insight, and look forward to contributing myself to the community in many interesting and hopefully insightful ways

Welcome aboard Ian.

This is a great place whet your whistle!

Thanks for the greetings MichaelR.

I was sitting here playing with my whistles, reading different posts and decided I had more to say :stuck_out_tongue:

First off, I used to play the flute in band, so my rebirth to woodwinds has been somewhat antural, even though whistling is entirely different I find, in subtle. For all of you are not aware (and some most certainly are) WhOA is a VERY REAL thing. The amount of whistles I have or am getting may not be justified by my skill, I do like to think it is justified by passion. I started with a little original clarke D, then got a Dixon Low D and then a B flat and a sop D by dixon as well. I don’t remember how it happened, then i tripped on Overton. Got an order of those now. Sad part is there are no whistles around here for the most part, save one kind that recently popped up, I come back to that. Anyways, first time i asked my friends in music or even at the music store where i might find a low whistle, no one even knew what it was :stuck_out_tongue: Needless to say then i have not had the luxury of trying whistles befoere buying them. I do have to thank brigitte Goldie for that, with my order of a few overtons, she has made any iffiness of buying whistles you’ve not played really go away (I do already have a Colin Goldie Low D so I know what I am getting into tonewise)…

Then i decided an alba was a cool idea, low D there, want that unqiue alba sound.

Now just a shout, and following up on where i said I did find one whistle available around here. MACNEIL WOODWINDS shipped some whistles to my local store. I actually had the priviledge of speaking with Ryan at the Boxwood festival in Lunenberg NS, Canada (and then brian Finnegan, which was too cool, but another story for another time) and I decided i wanted to support him. Having said that, i keep coming back to this whistle. It gives that elusive confidence to try some things you may not feel as comfortable with on other whistles. All and all, was very nice to trip over this whistle and this maker.

Anywho, I have major WhOA, and am loving every minute of it  So, yes that’s my whistle history, brief but intense  I don’t think you can ever have too many whistles, regardless. hahaha.

I am now learning by myself with tutor books and try to soak up as much music as i can in the irish tradition. I have also been playing around with my brother who plays guitar (mostly blues) coming up with some interesting bits. Hoping for good things
