Interesting variations on Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

I was watching a clip of The High Kings performing Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore and noticed that they do some nice variations on the tune that I had not heard before that I actually really like.

So the question is (are you listening MTGURU?), can anyone give me the ABC notation for this in the key of G?

I admit that I am horrible at transposition.

I would be forever in your debt of course.

Cheers! Richard

You sure you want G, Richard? The tune is Mixolydian, so you want an easy flat 7th available - which would be F-nat in G. And the variation moves to the Mixolydian of the 4th.

The “Kings” do it in Emix/Amix. I’d think Amix/Dmix would be a better choice for pipes than Gmix/Cmix.

Here below is the transcription of the vid in EMix as performed, followed by a transposition to AMix, as I mentioned above. For this verse-and-chorus mangling - I mean reworking - of the song, I’ve marked the variant parts, and you can figure out where they all go. The transposed setting is playable on pipes, except perhaps for the last part in E. That “raising the key” is just a performance trick anyway.

If you need this in another key for singing, just plug it into the online Folkinfo converter and use the transposition function:

This melody, with the harmony it suggests, is a favorite of mine. According to a note on Mudcat by a John Moulden:

The common Paddy’s Green Shamrock Shore was first sung on an EFDSS LP(1969) by Packie Manus Byrne, now over 80 and living in Ardara Co Donegal. He was born at Corkermore between there and Killybegs. It was taken up by Paul Brady and subsequently.

And speaking of which, and by way of antidote to the High Kings, here’s Paul Brady and Andy Irvine:

Hey MT,

The version of this tune I play starts as such in my poor ABC sorta way:

Dabga Daf#af# DeDD

Can it be transposed to start like this?

Many, many thanks again!

Richard

Ahh, the beloved and much-maligned Truck Drivers Gear Change, also referred to as the “Star-Search Modulation.”

Every trad player needs this. :really:

I’ve always liked Paul Brady’s version - thanks for the vidoe  I didn’t even recognize the High Kings’ version!!

I am not literally talking about learning The High Kings version. I already know this tune.

All I was referring to was the extra musical parts I had not heard before that I thought were interesting.

I am never closed minded musically to new ideas.

IMO: Just so you know (and I am not defending The High Kings or Celtic Women or Riverdance or Celtic Thunder, etc. either way), these shows have done more to spread Irish culture around the world than most Trad Bands and musicians for better or worse.

Also, these shows provide a substantial income to many musicians compared to most of us who play occasionally and have day jobs.

Cheers! Richard

 I don’t think I ever heard an actual name for it, though it makes sense that there’d be one. And here I thought I’ve been hanging with the hip crowd all these years. On second thought, that crowd includes you, doesn’t it … Anyway, I’m a complete sucker for cheap tricks. Now let’s play some reels in 7/8 …

Sorry, Richard, I don’t recognize that melody. Can you point me to an example?

FWIW, I think this HK performance is not bad for its ilk, if commercially bland with insipid new lyrics - fairly understated, nice box and fiddle from Martin O’Connor and Nollaig Casey. And people have been reworking songs since Adam.

Let’s put it this way…

I play this tune starting on low D. Does that help to transpose it?

Richard

Ah, so! Here’s a transposition to D. I also fixed some transcription errors in the C parts here and above.
