instrument for an irish recession

I gave up playing my fiddle because I averaged an A string every two weeks…Good Violin strings are a tad expensive, Yes spending has halted to "music, heat, food and shelter! My whistle requires “air” no strings attached! Air…the only thing left on this earth that is free. A stradavarious of whistles can cost less then weekly groceries…so after fasting for a week with my whistle I can now enjoy a tune after supper!!! :pint: I have often thought, “what would i do if I could not play music?” …I still have not come up with the answer…and hope I never have to figure that one out.
God bless the wood winds!..as long as you can afford to take a breath of air you can afford to give it back to a few notes on a whistle or flute etc.

Merry Christmas,
Greg

That sounds like a needed trip to the fiddle repair shop. A good synthetic or steel core string should last for 6 months or more. Breaking strings point to a bad bridge or nut, or misadjusted tailpiece.

Still, there’s no reason not to play both fiddle and whistle. Maybe not at the same time …

MtGuru…I can always count on you…lol! It’s due to calloused fingers and an aggressive vibrato…fraid strings arent the greatest. i’ve filed my hard finger tops…yes and tried to play softer…but ahh The whistle is just the thing to punt the fiddle…Actually I think i’ll go play a tune right now

or try playing fiddle with gloves on?

Maybe a cello would be better…

The difference between a fiddle and a cello is that a cello burns longer…so Maybe chop that cello up for fire wood to save money on the light/heat bill… then take the money saved to your music store and buy another whistle

I believe the “Lira Organizzata” was an historical Hurdy-Gurdy that had strings AND organ pipes. Wouldn’t that be playing fiddle and pipes at the same time? :open_mouth:

I love the way you expressed that, Greg! Free music with a whistle! That is great, and so true! My guitar strings are always wearing out, but the whistles have as much air as they need!
