I’ve just bought a recorder and a tin whistle. I’m now searching for a good tutor (book or online-tutor) to the tin whistle. Can anybody recommend a good book or website . I’m especially interested in a good treatise about half-holing and i would like to see pictures about the fingering at half-holing. Can anybody say if the Clarke Tin Whistle Deluxe Edition with CD (Audio) (Penny & Tin Whistle) has a good treatise about half-holing. Is the knowledge to the recorder also applicable to the tin whistle.
Do i cover the half hole with my finger tip at half-holing?
Is it recommendable to learn both instruments at the same time or should i master one after the other?
The Clark Tin Whistle Tutor (Bill Ochs) is great. You can’t go wrong with it.
As for half-holing: You don’t need a tutor. How you do it depends on what music you want to play. If you play Irish folk (or related stuff), you are best off covering the holes of the whistle with your pads, and rolling the finger off slightly to half-hole. Maintain contact with the hole at one side (or top, if you roll that way). There is no magic to it.
About recorder: It’s really a different instrument made for playing different sorts of music. Don’t know what else to tell you. What kind of music do you want to play?
I think i’m open to all kinds of music. The reason why i want to learn these instruments is i want to make ear training with a handy instrument
in bed watching movies, listening to melodies and playing it on the instrument.

If that’s the case I’d choose one instrument or the other. If it’s really TV melodies (Pop, jingles, Volksmusik) I go with the recorder: You never know what keys your going to get.
If it’s a matter of finding tunes you have in you head on a simple instrument, I’d use the whistle (and not worry about half-holing).
