okay, i couldn’t help myself.
Color me jealous.
That’s a beauty ![]()

now i just need to figure out what to sell in order to placate the trouble & strife…
Nice flame. Looks like a flat top, and maybe carved back…or is it flat too?
I like Keith’s bridges for archtops…pretty cool.

i’m pretty sure both the top and back are flat. maybe the flame makes the back look slightly curved.
here’s Keith’s website

That is a beauty.
I am thankful that money, or lack of it, precludes me from MAS at this time ![]()
The other thing is that between whistles and my mandolin, I can’t imagine splitting my time up with one more instrument. But if’n I get good enough on my Mid-Mo to warrant adding a different sound to the collection—which I sorely want to do sometime during the next year—it will be a tough decision between A body oval or f-hole, arch top or another flat. I will confess I’d like to try a IV kit this summer when my boys are here, but alas, I’m going off topic. Please forgive me.
I really do like that body style where most of the body is below the tone hole and how the contour comes in close to the neck and oval all together. Very nice. I hope you tell us how it fairs with other similar body styles that you have played. Can you do that for us?
Thanks
Lorenzo, a flat version of that Newell bridge on a Mid-Mo would be nice, but I know Keith doesn’t do “accessory” pieces unless it’s part of a mando he’s making. Maybe someday, he makes nice instruments.
Well, you may not be able to afford MAS right now, but your place in the mandolin world is secure, now that you’ve had a strap named after you. ![]()
sure thing, few things i like to talk about more than mandolins…
I’ve seen his tailpieces on other builders’ mandolins – Ira over at the MC board has a Newell tailpiece on his Kennaquhair, for example.
I’m looking forward to my new strap . . . now that you mention it ![]()
I’m just waiting for my endpins from IV so I can fashion a custom strap button to match the heel on my Mid-Mo. I ordered an ebony and rosewood to see what I would like. This new strap that Loren made is for the shortened length so I can try out the single shoulder position, which I think I’ll like better.
I saw those on his site and emailed him. He said it would be too expensive to just sell tailpieces (not that he wouldn’t do it I imagine if you up’d the ante) but I can understand the time he has to put into every instrument. On the other side it would be kind of like putting a Porsche badge on a VW to make it look better . . . maybe a bad example?
So you’re the one who bought the Newell? Cool! Did you get the flat or radiused fingerboard? Looks flat in the photo. I thought about getting one of the two, but have decided to stay with what I have until after the fleadh.
Congrats, give us a sound file when you get it in!
Rick
Thanks!
I got the flat FB – i sort of wanted the radius but someone got it before me… Keith said he thought the action was a little better on the flat FB anyway.
i’m hoping to get it today…
oooooooo . . . excitement is building!
Well i got it, it’s lovely. I lowered the action a bit, looks like there’s J74s on there – i’ve been playing a little lighter strings with a Clayton .80, so there’s a bit of adjustment. Playability is very good, the FB is 1-3/16", the neck is a rounded V and fills my hand nicely. Body’s not as big or deep as the Foley, so the voice isn’t as full (also the Foley is 10 years old). Sounds nice, though, and the adi top and maple back give it some pop – it actually chops pretty well for a flat top. Came with an oblong featherlite case, for the price it was a great deal.
I’m still fumbling around with it – i had time to record a quick clip before my son protested that i’d turned down the volume on Thomas the Tank Engine. Not my best work, but it should give you an idea of how the mandolin sounds after about 15 minutes of playing.
Sounds pretty good to me.
Tone sounds great, bright and solid. Nice playing too, rh.
Nice sounding mando, rh, and nice variation on My Love is in America.
Did you do any nut/bridge action, or just tweak the truss rod? Are you using the rounded edge of the Clayton? I usually play with a Dunlop 1.00, but sometimes play a Clayton .72, and it sounds a lot more “pickety” than that .80.
