A friend of mine brought in his new whistle and let me play it. It is an O’Brien soprano D. I immediatley fell in love with it. I have never played a whistle so effortlessly before. I have quite a few whistles including Hoover, Burke, Susato, Serpant,Clarke, Walton, Chiefton but they just didn’t compare to this!
I had never heard of this brand until then. Has anyone else ever? Or do you have one? Was this a one time fluke of the perfect whistle or is this standard for it? All I know is that I now have put a bunch of stuff on ebay to try and get the money to buy one.
I am really interested in your opinion of this.

Mr. O’Brien has only recently started making the wooden whistles (thus the tour), but he has been making copper whistles for a while, and he will from time to time plate the copper in nickel. As far as I know, these are the only materials he works in.
They are very nice whistles. I have a lovely set he made in the nickle plated copper. The contrast between the copper, seen through the holes, and the nickle outer makes them beautiful to look at as well as to play. I’ve been rather neglecting mine, as I have gotten others since and have yet to rotate back into them. They are quite affordable, and David is a great guy to deal with.
I have a Bb, C, and D set with custom pinkie holes. They are nice Whistles, I love the sound. The workmanship is a bit rough, but at the price they are still a good deal.
David sent a couple three-piece soprano Ds on tour last year; I think he calls the three-piece model the Rover. Good thing he sent two whistles on the tour; I knew I was keeping one of them as soon as I blew the first notes. Mine is nickel-plated copper with the mouth piece of the same material. He has since gone to the Delrin mouth piece. The three-piece is a neat feature. The whistle comes with a tweed roll that puts the whole whistle in a package about half the size of a pack of cigarettes. Very easy to carry and a wonderful whistle to play.
Mr. O’Brien is on this message board. A topic about his whistle made of purpleheart wood has been at the top of the page for what seems like multiple weeks now.
I’ve been tempted by his instruments so I’m glad to hear good reviews! That Rover in African Blackwood looks nothing short of beautiful.
