I’m trying to figure out whether the chanters used in the tune “Hymn of the Sea” (see link) are narrow- or wide-bore. The first chanter starts at 1:12 and the second one starts at 4:38. All I know is that the first one is in D and that the second one is in B. Anyone here with a trained ear who can hear what bore they have?
He’s the guy who spends the entire party talking about his pipes.
I don’t have a trained ear, but I do have a trained bear, and he tells me that the first set is concert-pitch D, and therefore (sui generis) “wide-bore.” It doesn’t sound like a narrow-bore D.
The second set is, yes, in B, and therefore (sui generis) “narrow-bore.” They may have fiddled with the pitch electronically, but not by much–you can usually tell by listening to the speed of the vibrato.
you pipe geeks…
A trained bear is nothing but a trained ear in B.
Hi, Alain Froment Concert D and B chanters are used & Eric Rigler was the player. AA ![]()
mmm Rigler…
Me too, but he only speaks Esperanto. Can’t understand a thing of what he says.
He’s a damn fine cook though.
I was thinking in those lines as well. It doesen’t sound as mellow as a narrow chanter would.
Are all B chanters narrow-bore?
No.
But they should be ![]()
PD.
But they should be
Yep!
