Just curious, as I’m still very new to the world of uilleann piping. It would seem that the Narrow bore chanter’s are quieter then the wide bore’s, but how noticeable is the difference in your experience? For example, a narrow bore pitched in D, and a wide bore pitched in D.
And is a narrow bore still a conical bore only well… more narrow?
I’m not really asking which one is “better”, but rather player’s likes and dislikes between the two bores.
Just curious, I hope I didn’t miss this in a FAQ or whatever.
I have an Angus narrow D, a Gallagher B and a Pat Sky budget D. The difference in the volumn between the narrow and wide is tremendous. The narrow is very similar to the B. Also, the tone hole sizes are about the same between the narrow D and the B.
When playing the Sky chanter, it literally vibrates in your hand. The narrow is much more subtle. I’ll actually be selling the narrow D once I get my Boisvert full concert set as I’ll just continue playing flat when I want the quieter chanter and that mellow mellow grumble buzz of the B.
Oh, I should also mention that my narrow D is more-or-less worthless in a session as you can’t hear yourself playing. Great for practise or solo though.
