Hubbert: creative genius?

I decided to put these pics here in the regular forum (as opposed to the stickied thread) because . . . well, the third is one of the best uilleann pipe photos I’ve ever seen.

I’ll post pics and sonic impressions once I have the set in my hands, but Michael Hubbert’s been good enough to whet my appetite with occasional pics of my set. I ordered a 3/4 set in cocus/silver/mammoth from him.

Anyway, here goes. Forum-friendly formats; just click to see them full-size.

Stuart

Must be a D pitch set. That bug’s hands wouldn’t stretch far enough to cover the holes on a flat pitch chanter.

Seriously though, lovely pipes.

Nice pipes. Michael Hubbert has a special eye.

I have always thought the set at the bottom of the page below is the best colour combination I have seen on any set of pipes.

I would love to see more pictures of the set.

Mukade

The more I see of his work, the more I appreciate his eye for form. Loverly stuff.

Absolutely amazing! Hubbert’s a genius, that fly almost looks real!

Doc

Oh, the rest of the pipes are lovely too.

I expect there ,ll be a nice buzz off the drones !!!

RORY

Yes, I wonder if it’s a Spanish fly?

And yes, it’s a concert-pitch set.

Stuart

One down, three to go!!! Great you got yours…waiting…waiting…

It cant be concert pitch
,the regulator keys are flat set regulator keys

RORY

Huh?

They look like a beautiful set of pipes, and when I look at them I assume they are flat pitched pipes because of the reg keys !!
The shape of the keys are very simalar to the shape of the keys on Geoff Wooff sets .
Putting that shape keys on a concert pitch set is like putting a roof rack on a ferrari , its just not right !!!

RORY

Nothing unique about those keys on a concert set. Look at Brian McNamara’s K&Q concert set.

Here’s a photo album of K&Q regulators. DQ refers to this as the Reid style:

Yes Michael is a fantastic craftsman and has a true artist’s eye for form, and a deep respect for both the sound and visual aesthetics of old instruments. There are so many makers out there with no eye at all, making pipes that look like they should be sold at IKEA. Some will say, I don’t care what my instrument looks like as long as it sounds right, but a true artist, a true craftsman, like Hubbert, takes into account the totality of the instrument, its sound and appearance.

I didn,t say unique,Isaid not right !!!
But also Hubbert,s keys are more like coynes than reid,s !!!

RORY

And what! have we got here stuffed up the chanter bore here, looks very interesting. :astonished: all the best, :sunglasses:

A helpful illustration from Mr. Quinn:

I don’t doubt you, but what are the differences between Coyne and Reid keys?

Oh, so the keywork on concert regs has to be ugly. Sorry.

Stuart

I didn’t suggest that they were ugly. I think it’s a gorgeous looking set.

No, Rory was just saying they looked “wrong.”
