Howard...Clarke's

I finally bought my ugly gold diamond Clarke’s and tried a Howard Low D. The finger holes are kind of hard to reach and cover. Blowing is not a problem  I guess I’ll just have to make do with my non-tunable Dixon for now until I scrounge up enough cash for an Overton  I’ve tried one and it so rocks. Finger stretch, every thing about it was amazing!!!

Chih

I tried a Howard Low D once in the Hobgoblin shop in London.

While the holes were larger than most makes, I like the rounded edges on them, and found it very comfortable under the fingers, and didd not think the stertch was too much. Horses for courses I guess.

I didn’t buy one because my Dixon fills my low D needs for the moment, but if I were in the market for a Low D, a Howard would be high on the list.

I adore my Howard low D. I tried a Cheiftain and Susato in the store, and the Howard was the most comfortable and easy to play. I don’t even need to use the piper’s grip when I play it.

Must be nice having stores nearby that have whistles you can touch, feel, blow… :sniffle:

I was rather impressed myself. There’s bottle of antiseptic spray on the counter with all the whistles. I’m glad it was there. One time I saw a guy test all 20 Generation Ds in a basket to pick the “perfect” one.

I’ll be in Ottawa for a few days this summer. What shop is that?
Cheers,
Aaron

I have a Howard low C and an Overton low D. Obviously I can’t make a direct comparison but I would assume the D to be like the C in tonal quality and responsiveness.

I like the Howard and regard it as a perfectly acceptable choice. But I love the Overton—it’s still one of my favourite whistles even though it was in the first batch of high-end whistles I ordered.

Its called the Ottawa Folklore Centre. Their high end whistles seem expensive, but the staff is great and there’s a lot to be said for the"try before you buy" attitude.
