I think I’m ready to try a low d whistle now,but the music shop near me only stocks 3 types,Dixon,Susato and Howard.Out of these 3 which would you choose ![]()
Dixon or Howard - but try them first as they are very different. Or there’s mail order…Big Whistle in England is excellent, Mick O’Brien sells Burkes from Dublin, and Phil Hardy will post you a Chieftain.
But what qualities are you looking for in a Low D?
Trisha
Hi Trisha,thank’s for the reply,
I’m looking for something that has nice clear deep tone, not too breathy, and doesn’t require too much air.
I dont want to spend too much money at the minute untill I see if I like the low d’s or not…probably around the region of £50-£70.
Overton ![]()
if you go for a Howard, buy one direct from the website as Brian has just improved the head of the Low D again. He had some on the ‘Floating Tionol’ and they sounded just great. A player of another brand of low whistle wanted to part-ex his straight away.
I would recommend the Howard over the other two. Although there is definitely no shame is owning a fine Dixon or Susato, but if the choices were of those three, I say the Howard. Here is my reason: PVC/Polymer whistles are fine, but I prefer the sound of the “Metals” such as TIN, Alluminum, Nickel and my favorite Brass. Others in the forum may suggest the other two whistles over the Howard. I would suggest that you ask to play all three (if the shop has demos that you can play) and then make a decision. Heck, you may play all three and decide you don’t like any of them. Then you can takes Paul’s choice and grab a Overton, or my preference a Chieftain…Good Luck on making your choice… ![]()
I have both the howard & susato and of the two recomend the howard. It’s an easy blower easy to play with great sound.
The susato is great for traveling as it is a two piece.
I also have an overton, great whistle but from what you describe you are looking for I would go with the howard…
