How do I read the ABC Irish Tunes???

I can not figure out what some of the symbols mean in the ABC stuff. Such as “~” or “3…” Could someone help me out?

Thanks

Here is a converter http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html
Cut and paste the ABC into this one, click on submit and get it converted into standard notation, and midi file.

Cheers

Hi Pennywhistle,

~ means that the next note should be played as a roll.
Numbers tell you how long a note should be. If there’s no number behind a note, the note itself has the “default note length” as stated in the header, usually an eighth note in jigs and reels (1/8). If there is a number behind a note, its default note length is multiplied by the number. Examples:
~B3 (long B roll on a dotted quarter note)
~B2 (short or condensed B roll on a quarter note)
