Holifield Low D whistle tour

Hello all.
I have been introduced to the idea of staging a UK whistle tour. I have to admit I had not heard of this until today but I think it might be a good idea (he said cautiously).

So. I am looking for a list of 10 or so people who would be willing to take part.
Once I have the 10 I will send the whistle to the first on the list with the instruction to keep the whistle for a week play it and assess it then post it on to the next person on the list.
Each person will be required to post their appraisal on this thread.

I have never tried this so please bear with me if it’s a bit clunky to start with.

Please don’t think you have to be an expert player, all opinions are welcome and valid.

I’m not in the UK currently, but Alaska.
I… used to live there?

Hey Norm,
I’d definitely be up for taking part in the whistle tour! Think I bought the first whistle you sold on eBay and reviewed that a while back, it’s still my workhorse, thanks a bunch for a great whistle. Am based in Cornwall and I’d love a chance to see what the low D is like

I’m in Glasgow,
Be willing to do a sound clips/ videos.

UK tour? Yep, please count me in… but why not include a high D too?

I will join in too, if I may.

Hi Norm
I’m in the UK can you put me on your list for the tour.
I’ll PM you my details.

We have five willing volunteers so far. I was thinking of going to ten. So five places left.

I’m in the UK and would love to take part.

The tour kicks off today. I have just posted the whistle off to the first person on the list.
For various reasons the I have arranged the tour in the following order.

  1. Glasgow
  2. Caithness
  3. Kinlochleven
  4. Tarleton, Lancs.
  5. Bournemouth.
  6. Liskard, Cornwall
Hope you like it. Have fun.

Look forward to it!

Well I’ve had the whistle a few days now.
I should say I play much more flute than low whistle and even more piccolo than high whistle.
I’m sure another on the tour will be able to do a more traditional type of review.
I’ll just say I really am enjoying it. Everything about it is nice.
It does what I want a good whistle to do for me which is give the player some options. It can be played from pure and to more flutey or complex.
The bottom is nice and solid and the top notes are easy and clear.
It looks very professional and the finish/ logo everything is fine work.
I can’t think of any other low whistle as nice for the price.
It is very in tune at equal temperament according to an iPhone tuner. F# bang on the green which could be viewed as a good or bad thing depending on where you’re standing.
I found it liked oxoxxx for high c natural and tolerated that for a low c fingering. Oxxooo worked as well.

Here are a couple of videos I made using an iPhone which may distort the sound a bit but will give you an idea of the sound I was getting yesterday.

Someone trying to play purer and cleaner would I’m sure be getting a different sound altogether, I’m sure.

If there is a Glasgow Piping Meet up on October 1st.
I will see if anyone there wants to have a shot than it’ll be off to Caitness in the morning…

All the best and thanks to Norm,
Patrick

Just out of interest Dun what other low D’s have you played and how does Norm’s compare to those?
