High G whistle

Who makes high G whistles? I know sometimes they can be shrill and irritating, but does anyone make them? I have a nickel Generation high G, and that is pretty much the only one I’ve ever come across.

Collin

Susato makes them, and Generation as you noted. Many of the individual makers (ie Hoover,Busman) would probably do them as a special order.

I’m unsure that Paul [Busman] makes them…but I know Mike Burke makes them. As well as Daniel Bingamon. And there’s another…I think its David Parkhurst.

Generation makes a Brass and a Nickel hi G. You really need fairly small fingers though. The Hi F is easier to play.

Thats the other one.

Nope, I don’t make them. The turning of a wooden tube that small, with walls that thin is something boggling to contemplate. The late great Glenn Schultz made them and I’m lucky to own such a whistle. Not much thicker than a pencil with walls amazingly thin. On top of all that, it has a simply lovely sound-- not at all shrill.
You might try contacting Glenn’s family if you’re seriously interested. They had a number of Glenn’s whistles left, and there might be a G or two.

That has to be a fine whistle.

Much easier. The Gen Fs and Gs are both fine (better than the Ds!), but the finger spacing on the Gs is cramped - and I have small hands. F is SO much easier.

Chris Abell makes an absolutely wonderful liltte high G.
It’s not on his web site yet (I believe he started making them in the spring of 2005).
They cost $300.00, including shipping.

They are surprisingly mellow for such little fellows; and deliciously woody sounding.

Chris likes to off-set the third top hand hole (ring finger) which provides just that much more room for the fingers.

I love that little thing.

I like the sound of those Abells!!!

Gary Humphry makes one for 65.00!!

Can’t go wrong there…Gary is a real craftsman and has a 30 day money back guarantee.

I recently got one of his D+C whistles…sweet!

How could I have forgotten about Gary?!?!?!

Based on the Humphrey I saw earlier this summer, that 'lil G ought to be terrific, and a bargain at the price.

I have the Susato. It’s nicely in tune, but got me banished to the back room. I’m not sure it has any use besides annoying your neighbors. My Gen high F is MUCH less shrill for something comparatively pitched.

I tried a Burke high G and was very impressed…cool construction also! Nice tone.

Yeah, it was mine I think that Parky tried. It’s nice and less than the $300. You really should consider how much you might use it before making an investment of either $120 or $300 though.

I’m new to the forum and rather new to the playing of whistles as well–
I just acquired a Generation high G and am trying to decide hwat I thikn of it. Is there a way I can modify it to make it a little less shrill/more breathy? Or is that hoping for the impossible? I like it until so or la in first major as discribed in this site.

That’s the extra “fun” that comes with GEnerations!!! You can never be sure if you get a good one, or a bad one. I think Jerry Freeman tweaks them (might be for sale over at Gaelic Crossings). If there any excess plastic in/around the mouthpiece? You may want to DELICATELY cut it off with an X-ACto knife.

I’m not quite sure, is the thing…I don’t know that much about where that extra plastic might be. It’s not bad sound, overall…just a bit shrill.
Also, is the fingering the same for g as for d? I can’t seem to find any g tutorials.
