hi,everyone, first time to this fourm,excuse me,my english is so poor :slight_smile:
my name is cai shao yang,came form china,i love irish traditional music,and i love the penny whistle
i like danu 、ciorras and others

i bought a clarke D 2months before, and i sell it, for a high D form dive shaw.

the shaw whistle is very good,i like it so much,and i wish to collect all of them(the shaw whistle)

in china, most of people don’t konw the penny whistle,they also like,but they think the tone played by
bagpipe

in china,some people like the timbre from whistle as me,but too difficult to buy pennywhsitle.

Ni Hao and welcome! You’ll have a lot of fun with the whistle. Do you play any Chinese music on it along with Irish? Do you play any traditional Chinese instruments? My wife and I were lucky enough to visit China a few years ago and I got a Dizi and Xun which are both terrific instruments.

thanks all,you are all good man! haha ! you called “DIZI”,wirte in china “笛子” ，we also call it “flute” or “bamboo flute” in china.

i also use the penny whistle play some chinese traditional music,and the LOW D whistle sounds very like a “xiao(箫)”—— a chinaese folk instrument.

in china,Most can represent the Chinese musical instrument is “qin （琴）”，but only few people can play that。its too hard！！ my frined chen study it for 5 years,and then still give up.

In ancient China,nobleman have to study “琴、棋、书、画”（qin、chess、penmanship and Chinese painting），qin has seven
strings，and used more than 70 fingerings！！！ it is amazed，A history of over four thousand years

I would like to ask you a question

when i play C-natural use my SHAW D，i found the fingering “ oxxooo”，sonuds strange。

if i use “oxxxxo”， it is well。

why？ and other whistle form SHAW all like this？

now i be used to this fingering，if i play other whistle，ex. susato，feel more unaccustomedness。


it is a problem！ why？

I’m sure you will get some more expert players to answer your C natural question, but I think it depends on the whistle. I have seen people post that they play it OXXOOO or OXXXOO, or OXXXOX. Or some people are in favor of half holing. :smiley:

(Did I cover all the possibilities there?)

oxxxxo is too flat on most whistles. But if it works on your Shaw whistle, then use it! We can call it the Cai Shao Yang fingering. :slight_smile:

It is also a common fingering for C-natural in the 2nd octave.

I can’t remember exactly what we saw in Suzhou. In a 9 day tour we visited your city plus Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing, so everything has sort of blurred in my memory in the past 5 years.
We did go to a silk factory and a pearl factory which I think were in your area. We also took a beautiful boat ride, and visited an amazing garden. This was hidden behind a fairly plain wooden wall and you’d never know the beauties that were behind that wall from looking at it. Truly wonderful.

china is not a very “free” country,not like USA.our goverment not allow us to say their back,even movie\books\music etc.

but china still a very wonderful country,because our goverment Treat people very well,we love our homeland.

chinese have 56 nations,the number of people is too much.and Some people intention irregular to china.so I can understand the behavior of our government. but i still hope oneday i can visit youtube freely,haha!
because in china,the videos about penny whitle or irish music is too few to find.

i also like irish.their histroy Full of the spirit of resistance,just like chinese. and now in the world,peace is the most important!! This is the idea of most of the Chinese people!

i know some western people don’t like china,they see chinese as the “red enemy”,These are the concept of left over by history. and our goverment taught us ,“The enemy as friends,world will be peaceful.”

it’s a Boring day. and 18:00,i back to home,and practice my whistle.

i translate the whistle gudie book by grey larson,and learn it. a very good book!and i like larson’s copeland! :open_mouth:

and dinner is also like other days. chinese food cooked so complex,The materials used very much.
one is “Green pepper Fried shredded meat”\ and “tomato and egg soup”"Soy sauce shrimp" and etc…

i cook them about 2 hours, you konw ,chinese very attached importance to “eat"and"food”.
they think food is the most important thing in our life. and we use “eating” to treat some minor illness!
and then, about 21:00,i Started online,but i can’t visit youtube or facebook,we have similar other sites,like “youku”.www.youku.com. A most important video sharing site,like youtube,we share our videos and music on it.
and all of chinese use a IMsoftware called “QQ”,just like ICQ,this is a important tool,second to phone in our life.

but,there is a big problem in chinese internet,“Problem of Piracy”! In Chinese folk, copyright consciousness are weak,
people all have a chivalrous spirit , many people think,No entity products, should be Shared.
this is a Distorted view from “communism”.it is wrong.

I think that most of us think that Chinese people are nice, just like us. It’s our governments that need help.

Every small town in the USA has a Chinese Restaurant. One time when I was waiting for my food, I played my bamboo flute. The kitchen staff came out to hear. They enjoyed the music but were disappointed my flute was a Western scale. I wish I would have known some Chinese folk music. They missed their home.
