Help with Meg

I just received 25 Megs from The Whistle Shop to resell at a workshop I’m giving. The mouthpieces are sealed in plastic. I opened one at random and compared it visually to my Sweetone. As far as I can tell, the barells and mouthpieces appear identical. BUT IT SOUNDED AWFUL! The tone is real fuzzy, the 2nd octave D ONLY comes out if you lift L1, the whole 2nd octave take way too much air and the A and B take way, way too much air. I switch mouthpieces with my Sweetone and it sounded just like my Sweetone, so I know there’s no problem with the barrell. The only thing I noticed about the mouthpiece is that the bottom (the part that fits on the barrell) is slightly oblong and ever, ever so slightly larger than my Sweetone mouthpiece (I can tell because it slipS off and on slightly eaiser than my Sweetone). If the mouthpiece is leaking air (but it really doesn’t seem like it is) that might explain the fuzzy tone. I think the real problem, however, is with the blade. BUT I DON’T KNOW WHAT! The blade LOOKS fine, but obviously it ain’t. I’m novice at tweeking (my one experience was pure luck). I hate to open all 25 whistles to QC them. What have your experiences been with the Meg? Everything I’ve read has been real positive. Did I just run across a bum one? Should I open some more to see how they are? I’d kind of like to keep them sealed instead of blowing my slime into them and then selling to someone who may not appreciate my slime as much as I do.

Thanks for you comments.

I would open a few more, say a total of five open, to check. if they are all bad, or most bad, contact Thom. It’s a good idea to have some open anyway to let people try. I hate buying a whistle without trying it and when I got my meg from Lark in the mornig they let me open it. I gambled on a second one that was going to be a gift, not opening it, and it turned out to be a good one as well.

Afterthought - if you open them ALL, people won’t know that they were sealed originally…

I found two Megs out of six I bought to be ‘fuzzy n buzzy’.
The cure was to pull off the fipple, and fill the gap under the windway with bluetack. It’s the same fix as for Generations that buzz.
Pack the bluetack (or similar) so that it is level with the end of the windway, and adjust it from there by adding or remove a tiny bit of it. I used a thin blade to smooth and pack the bluetack into the space.
Both work really well now. If the clour difference bothers you, use a black spirit pen to colour the tack after it is in place.

Then you can sell them for a dollar more, as “tweeked” Megs.
