Help Desperately Needed..

Hi All,

Just got to know about this forum and would really need all of you guy’s precious advice. I was just given a Yamaha Flute YFL-581H by a close friend. This B-foot flute has a solid silver CY cut headjoint, body and foot joint and silver-plated hand-crafted keys. However, I do not fancy the headjoint and am considering to purchase an additional headjoint to use with the body and foot-joint. Is this advisable? If so, any headjoints to recomment? Thanx in advance!!

This fourm is meant for players of the Irish Flute which is a simple system Flute and is different from the one you have. I am sure somebody here can help you though.

A nice enough flute for an intermediate instrument. I’m afraid headjoints for Boehms are a particularly personal sort of preference, and your best bet is to go to one of the flute conventions or shops where you can try a number of them.

If you’re looking for a wooden headjoint, you might consider one from Robert Bigio, Chris Abell, or Howel Roberts. Also, it is possible to get the silver headjoint recut to match your requirements. Plenty of aftermarket headjoints also available, from folks such as Sandy Drelinger, etc.

How much are you really willing to invest in a new headjoint to increase your playing enjoyment with the Yamaha? Myself, if not stepping up to a higher-end Boehm with a better scale, I’d go either for a Bigio (for wood) or have the headjoint recut, as an economic choice. First, BTW, make sure your current flute is well-adjusted by a technician. I used to have a 481H, straight from the shop, made many times better by being properly setup.

Of course, if you start playing an Irish flute, you may well leave your silver one unused in a drawer for a few years, no matter how good it is (hmmm… must remember to polish).
