Hello!

Hello! I’m a new member, led here as I looked about on the web for information about irish music. I just started playing the recorder and can play a few tunes (The Butterfly, Er Ean Bashtey, Hunting the Hare, and some others.)

I would like to learn the song,“My Lagan Love”, as sung by Sinead O’Connor, but I am having some difficulty working out the notes. I think I’ll have to change the key to make it work on my soprano recorder, perhaps starting on A. Am I being too forward in asking, as a newcomer, for some help with the task of working out the notes for this tune? I hope not! If some kind soul is willing to help me with this, it would be most appreciated. Thanks! -Sue

So far, I have :

A B C D D
Where Lagan streams

A G F# D C
Sing lullabies,

D F# G F# D D D
There blows a lily, fair.

A B C D D
The twilight gleam

A G F# D C
is in her eye

D F# G F# D D D
The night is on here hair

And, like a love sick leannán sà ,
She hath my heart in thrall
No life have I, no liberty,
For love is lord of all

And often when the beetle’s horn
Has lulled the eve to sleep,
I steal into her shieling lorn,
And through the doorway creep,
There on the crickets’ singing-stone
She makes the bogwood fire,
And sings in sweet and undertone,
The song of heart’s desire

A recorder?

By golly, I think you may be one of the only recorder players here.

But that’s OK, and welcome to you!

Does this help http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/2652 ? It’s in a different key than your attempt. Don’t worry about the “polka” label - read the comments and you’ll see why it’s labelled as such when it’s an “air”.

Cheers
Graeme

I first learnt this on recorder, here’s how it goes, but play it freely, the long notes can be held past their written time.

I am delighted by all the helpful responses. The notes are perfect, thank you all so much. What a wonderful, welcoming website!
