Howdy! I think I have been lurking on and off for over 10 years so I decided to take the plunge and register.
I’ve always enjoyed listening to Irish traditional music and I’ve had a few whistles to play around on (but haven’t actually played much Irish music on them). I finally decided I really want to learn how to play ITM myself, well. So I’m re-dedicating myself to my whistles
I have a motley collection:
I have a funny little Clarke original that I love, and I’m pretty comfortable with him. I feel like we are good friends. There’s also a lovely, easy to play Sweetone lying around here somewhere but I like the breathy, fidgety original better because ??? who knows.
I also have 3 Susatos in different keys that are buried somewhere in the basement after 2 moves. I don’t love them so much, so I haven’t really put the effort into excavating.
Last, I wanted to learn how to play the low D, so I purchased a Becker Low D in September to see how that would go. I am a lady with lady sized hands and it took a while to figure out the grip and notes, but by last month I deemed myself ready and capable and upgraded to an MK Kelpie. So now I am getting to know her, and really enjoying it so far. I appreciate the Becker for what it is (and the price!) but the MK is so much richer in tone and just lovely.
Besides having to work pretty hard to physically play this ponderous beast, I have a limited musical background and I’m particularly having a heck of a time figuring out how decode the lilt-y rhythms and then translate them to my fingers. I feel like I have internalized it and then things go off the rails somewhere when I try to emulate. I have a good ear for melody but apparently not for rhythm.
But we are working on it.
All said, nice to finally meet everyone and thanks for all the years of entertainment so far ![]()
