Psst! Hey Heather! Over here. Sshhh–let’s go around the corner for a second.
…
Okay. Do you remember when we talked about playing-- ah, hold on, let’s let that bodhran player walk by – that other kind of music in East Durham next time around? I was serious, man. I’m bringing the goods. Got Telemann, Haydn, Handel, Beethoven, Mozart, Kuhlau, Bach sonata transcriptions and lots more. All for two flutes. We’ll have to find a real secluded place to use this contraband. But then-- ahh, the harmonies. Through-composed, four-movement works that last 10 or 20 minutes. Beautiful, exotic keys! Dizzying modulations! Exposition, development, and-- yeah baby-- recapitulation! Codas! Cooooodaaaaaaaaas!!!
ahem. Sorry, got a little carried away.
So you in? You think we should see if maybe there are other deviants like us? Yes? Okay.
Oh, Brave Souls-who-play-C-instruments of Irish Arts Week, willing to risk losing your trad cred, speak now. Come on. Bach, baby. Don’t deny J.S. I even have Gilbert & Sullivan for the real pervs.
Cara
Edited to add more juicy adjectives & correct spleling
You don’t even need a C for Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. The second half is a bit tricky on the whistle due to a number of accidentals, but would be easier on a keyed flute. And it sounds lovely.
Ooh! Ooh! Is it that one Kuhlau flute duet – what was it? The Grand Sonatina or something like that? Ack! I can’t remember; my best friend & I played some of it for competition in high school (it was a riot).
Anyway, I’ll be up there Monday thru Wednesdayish. Sight-reading skills reasonable. Lemme know if you wanna play and I’ll pack HiYo Silver C, too.
Heather, think of this thread as a special omen, especially for you. [Assuming the voice of Moses] …And if you do not heed this call then you shall be bored and listless in mid-July when you should be shedding your cares, with music, reborn.
Cathy: Ibert? Hell, yes. Bring that Boehm flute. It will be a blast. I’ve got, I think, the three Op. 80 duets and the Op 81 by Kuhlau. Believe me, that’s more than enough. You can find me in Mike Rafferty’s morning class. I’ll be staying in the Shamrock Hotel boarding house. (This would be easier if there were a message board in East Durham) If all else fails you might see me carrying my gear around in a giant orange woven-plastic tote bag.
Cara stop dancing and laughing in your office, your giggling is upsetting your neighbours. So that is the secret twinkle in your eye when you said once in Windsor that you also like to play classical music on the flute.
Sounds …reads like you are planning a coup d’etat.
How about some arias from operettas like Show Boat and Okalahoma and my one single favorite is Some Day from the Vagabond King. It was sung by Mario Lanza and Janette McDonald—“Some day, I will seek you and find you, …..” Which brings up another question. When I play this kind of stuff for and with college music students, they all have the software, Finale 2002. You email to each other sheet music and it plays, slow or fast; change keys; add or remove accompaniments. If you guys had the software I would send some music and say “How about this?” And someone would send back saying “I can sing it better if we move it from D# to Fb like this.”
When is this Durham thing, I could drive down from WV. I could bring a copy of the software, even though I is illegal for me to give it to anyone, they might steal it from me when I was not looking, or come in my room and get it at their own peril. If someone would guarantee to play “Some Day” with me I might come. I have to teach soccer camps for 4 weeks out of the summer, so maybe I cannot go. When is it? Also, I want some good players to try my new cocobolo 8 key by Johnny Gallagher and see what they think.
Did you say Gilbert & Sullivan? Now THAT would be a hoot. My room at The Carousel Inn has a porch where we can practice our dark art. No one seems to mind. And the more the merrier!
There’s a piece colloquially called “The Hook Trio” which I heard first at a fife and drum muster a couple of years ago. Officiallly:
Trio No. I from Six Trios by James Hook, Op. 83 (1746 - 1827).
It’s in D and Bminor, has very few accidentals, and is pretty easy to sightread.
I don’t see why. Many of us are not really playing “Irish” Flutes anyway (though some still call them “Irish flutes”). As a matter of fact, my flute doesn’t have a drop of Irish blood.
It’s great to see all these folks coming out of the woodwork. I’ve been traveling today (I’m visiting Boston) and I just have a second here to reply to all my fellow insurrectionists
Heather, I’m so glad you changed your mind! The porch of the Carousel sounds divine. Jack, welcome aboard the H.M.S. Pinaflute. Kelly , Fyffer, and Nelson, bring all of the interesting stuff you and we can share.
Here’s something horrifying, tempting, or both: I also have a number of Sousa marches in duet form.
Mark, a coup d’etat was the furthest thing from my mind, but a taste of illicit power does funny things to people.
Aaron–it would give me a thrill to have a thread of mine locked.
Horrid news, I have a soccer camp from July 11 to 15 in Petersburg WV. But I might not have enough takers so I’ll double up with the Aug. 15 camp in Moorefield WV, not visa-versa as I had origionally planed (see
[/url]www.youth-soccer.com ) I’ll bring my Finale software and guard closely against someone stealing it. Espacially Aaron Malcomb. If he had a copy, I have a zillion GHB and other Scottish stuff he could see the notes and watch as the pointer plays them. I would just email them in the Finale format.
Maybe we should download PGP encryption software, that way Dale would not know what bad things we say to each other. Would he still kick us off? My friend, Phil Zimmerman was indited by the US government for inventing PGP–he invented and exported a tarrorist weapon.
Looks like we’re only going to be passing thru Monday & maybe Tuesday for the sessionage; I forgot about an aunt we need to visit before we head up to Vermont.
Families. Foo.
But anyway, if you guys do it Monday or Tuesday, I’m in. And if not, I look forward to the legend of the illicit “porch tapes” that mark the beginning of the flutesurrection; aka classical warfare at IAW!
Hi! Monday/Tuesday work for me - actually any day does, since I’ll be listening only (no classes this year).
There are both a.m. and p.m. classes at The Carousel, (usually McGratten & Claudy, all flute!) but my room & porch are in the back building, so we probably wouldn’t disturb anyone I’d be happy to go elsewhere too if y’all would like to try different venues - we can share the wealth with the Shamrock & other places!
I am feeling much better about my mid-July. Thanks Jack & Cara, see you soon.
